I'm a new owner of a 2002 disco 2, 93k mi, and I've been spending the past two weeks doing a major tune up. So far so good, however my latest issue has me concerned. The previous owner claimed to have just had the head gasket replaced and upon my initial inspection before purchasing all seemed fine. No smoke, oil good, coolant etc. Now ive driven her a couple hundred miles and I've got white smoke, water and soot spitting from exhaust, however, no sweet coolant smell. It had the dash waterfall sound until I filled and bled the coolant properly today. Any thoughts? O2 sensor? Running rich? God I hope its not the gasket.

 

Are you losing/consuming coolant? Now that you've bled the system take note.

Generally, if you have a blown HG, exhaust gases will be mixing with the coolant. Your local autoparts store will likely have a test kit for this.

 

Yep, seems like its drinking coolant faster than ever now and I believe I smell a faint scent of fuel in in the reservoir. I had also changed the plugs which had resolved the misfire issue I was having but it seems to have returned. About to inspect them now. Ill bet that's where at least one of the gasket failures is.
