Default 2010 LR2 HSE steering pump

Coming home from work today off the highway, noticed she was steering like a tank. No squealing whatsoever. Popped the hood to find my steering fluid is dark brown and smelling burnt. What is the best way to drain and refill the fluid? What brand should I use? Do I need to replace the reservoir? And, is there a way to tell If the pump is bad?
thank you!

Pentosin CHF 11s
or
Pentosin CHF 202

Yes you should replace the reservoir it has a filter in the bottom that gets clogged

Thank you for the reply, I did some research on it after I posted. Ordered my genuine new reservoir and the pentosin 202. Also watched a few methods to purge the system of the old fluid. Interesting to know that it takes hydrolic fluid! So I'll baby it for 2 more days waiting on my parts to arrive.
thanks again!

Mark,

No problem let us know if new fluid and a new reservoir fixes the problem.

To remove the hoses from the bottom of the Reservoir the one hose has a spring clamp

The other hose has a button on the connector must be pushed to release the connector

I needed pliers to release mine

Good luck

Paul

Default Power steering pump

Hi all,
So the day before my parts arrive, the tensioner pulley seized on the way to work. Luckily, a Rover mechanic was half mile away. The tensioner was giving me the steering issue! Dont know how that happened, but had no issue with the steering for the next 48 hours. I did replace the power steering res and fluids quite easily and shes been running beautifully since.
thanks for your honest and helpful insights!

Mark,

that’s great news

the serpentine belt, idler pulley, tensioner and overdrive pulley should be replaced around 10 years or 100,000 miles

you are lucky that the belt didn’t break and damage anything

I have been helping a friend in Dallas that had this happen on his LR2

Good luck

Paul

ps if you want to know the things that should but looked into at 10 years 100k then take a look at this link
