Carrier Bearing & Brake Cable - FYI
Here is some info for future reference about my 2010 LR2.
At about 15k miles a clicking noise when backing up started. I couldn’t pinpoint the noise and the dealer couldn’t find the source. Some days it was worse than others.
During the 25k oil change they were checking some items and found the rear differential electronic module had gone out. They replaced it, but there was still some clicking when backing up.
At about 26.5-27k a knocking started. It was toward the rear and I was thinking differential. It would only occur when taking off from a stop while in a 45 degree or more turn to the left or right….like pulling out into traffic from a stop. Over a week it got progressively worse to the point it would do it on occasion while going straight from a stop. The knocking could be felt if you put your hand on the center hump at the rear seats. It sounded like a front wheel drive’s cv joint when they start going bad. Also, it was pretty loud. I took it in and they found that the carrier bearing on the drive shaft to the rear differential was going out. They replaced it and it took care of that problem and it eliminated the clicking heard when backing up.
Less than two weeks later the knocking noise started again…..but, it sounded further back. I wasn’t 100% sure since the carrier bearing knocking in the beginning sounded further back that it was. I took it in again and they determined that it was the brake cable (emergency, I think) had come out of its bracket. So far so good, no knocking and no clicking noise when backing up.
Hope this helps and gets some additional info out about rear end noises.
