Default Looking at a 2010 LR2 HSE Help

Hello all,

Tomorrow I am driving 2.5hrs away to check out a 2010 LR2 HSE with approx 135k miles. I know little about land rovers but I am a mechanic at a mine so I do know basics to look for but looking for any input from you guys on specific things to look for and known common issues with these vehicles. Any help would be appreciated.
thank you

This car can be really great, but it can be a big can of worms if not maintained.

Gerabox whining noises might be from the rear diff which is a known failure point, might last 80-100k miles with normal mx. Some of us have extended that using better gear oil and frequent oil changes. If you need to replace that it might be $3K. If other gearboxes are bad, that would cost more. The cabin HVAC fan can make a noise which sounds very much like a gear whine... so turn that off before you assume gearbox trouble.

Rough shifting is likely and is *probably* due to either bad motor mounts, overdue ATF change or both. Fairly cheap and easy to fix both.

Assume that you'll need to replace ALL fluids, Land Rover does not have a change schedule for most of them (they expect you to throw the car away at 80k miles and buy a new one). The entire drive train is volvo, which does have mx intervals, and the owner community has come up with some pretty good schedules.

3.2 i6 engine is pretty bullet-proof if maintained, with synthetic oil. So that's good.

At that mileage, if you need reliability for road trips I'd probably plan to replace these items (unless already done):
- ignition coils
- Radiator, water pump, thermostat, ATF heat exch., oil heat exchanger, coolant reservoir.
- Accessory belt, tensioner, and idler pulley.
- PS reservoir(has built-in filter) & fluid

Those are "when" not "if" failures.

Some detailed info on this website. Be aware that Freel2 site is UK oriented, and they mostly have the diesel engines, so for anything engine-related make sure you know which one they're talking about. The non-engine stuff pretty much all applies to all versions....

Thank you for the response. I plan on changing all fluids with synthetics all around. We don't plan on any long road trips with it, just around town and occasional 2.5hr drive to see family. I work 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off and when I am home I am driving atound with my 2 year old son in my diesel truck which is kind of a pain getting around areas, grocery stores, school, etc. So this vehicle will just be for me to drive around and for our family friend to take him places when she is at our house watching him while I am gone at work. All the "repairs" you mentioned as a failure of when not if, I can take care of myself at home. The price right now is 4k but I think I could get it for less.
