Default P 0561, HDC fault, 3 yellow symbols on dash now, no start

Well, I did not expect my day to go like this but.....

Started LR2, after about a minute, started hearing some weird sounds. I thought it could be the PCV cover but I changed that a few weeks back pro actively. Drove for about two-three minutes with squeaks and smelled a mild burning. Both squeak and smell went away after another 5 mins. I drove it for almost an hour and notice the the transmission seemed to really lag, a bit jerky on take off and acceleration was slow, then the HDC fault beeped on dash and I got 3 yellow symbols (ABS, Message Centre & HDC). Parked and shut it down and can not restart.

So, my thoughts, the alternator is toast? The brakes overheated or a wheel sensor is bad? I don't think it's a battery issue; battery is AGM bought at the beginning of 2020.

I did read the codes: P0561, powertrain unstable voltage. Only code without scanning without an actual SDD scan. Can't get to the SDD and run it at the moment.

Thoughts???

Can boost it and she starts without any display faults. Battery voltage prior to boosting and on wake up was 11.71 volts. Now I have to test voltage with vehicle running to see if it's the alternator. Recharging my booster right now and will post back. BTW, LR's price on an alternator is insane!

The SDD probably needs to be run on the car to see what it reports. And NO ONE buys new alternators from dealers these days. Remanufactured or used is the way to go.

It's defo the alternator; it's not charging the battery. Now to get a replacement.

Well that's cheaper than a tranny. I replaced the alt once at about 90K.

It always amazes me how computerized cars start to behave when they have electrical supply issues. It's like watching a car full of clowns crash into a truck full of monkeys.

On a side note, my battery is a Costco Energizer Max H7 AGM. Costco shipped it to me in Jan 2020 and it was made that very week. I would buy another in a heartbeat :850CCA at -17C, 140mins reserve and 80 amp hrs. I am in Canada.

Thor,

have you replaced the overdrive pulley on the Alternator?

if you haven’t the bolt for the drive pulley can back out and then the Alternator won’t rotate with the engine.

My S80 has a rebuilt Bosch Alternator and it is excellent. For my $$$ I will be getting a Bosch unit for my LR2 (unless I replace the brushes first and it doesn’t fail, which is unlikely, something will fail)

When I bought my S80 I did a performance test on the Alternator (part # is for a rebuilt Bosch). I turned on electric loads at idle and I monitored the Voltage to see when the Alternator couldn’t keep up. From memory it passed: high beams + Blower on high + AC max cool to force radiator fan on + Radio + Heated Front Seats + Rear defrost

Adding + Heated rear seats was a little too much and the Voltage dropped by 0.3 volts. It was still charging but it couldn’t get to the set point from the ECU. Something like 14.2 V dropped to 13.9 V

Note the Volvo doesn’t have a Heated Windshield like the LR2

Good luck

Paul

Interesting. Not all LR2's are fitted with heated windshields. The models for the middle east market, as an example, would not have them since they would be fairly useless. However, if you do have it, your alternator needs to be the 180 amp model, to handle 2500+ watts of power draw.
