P0299, whistling engine
Hi all,
The check engine light came on in my '13 LR2 with 99K, and I had the code checked at a parts store: P0299. It whistles when I hit the accelerator. Just dropped it off at the shop for tomorrow's appointment. Any thoughts? Had it 3 years and only other trouble I ever had was needing to add a very small amount of coolant.

Sounds like the turbocharger is giving up the ghost, or you have an air leak somewhere in that system. See this thread:

Sounds like the PCV valve, which is integrated into a larger cover. The cover goes by different names: valve cover, camshaft cover. The part # is LR023777. There is a different part # for the gasket, but when I recently purchased a replacement from RoverParts.com it came with the gasket.
It's a simple job to replace. You just have to be careful not to drop any of the bolts facing the firewall. Here's a good video showing the replacement. The funny thing is that I broke the same little plastic retainer that the guy in the video broke!

I was wondering how that could be, since the PCV valve only prevents reverse airflow into the crankcase, and I was thinking "How in the wide, wide world of sports would that throw a P0299 error?"
Heard from the shop. It was in fact the turbocharger. $1500 part + 6 hours labor. Should have it back tomorrow.
Bonus: They found slow radiator leak. As I reported in another thread, my coolant light would come on only in winter! I topped it off (thanks again, flybd5) and now light is off. The shop said that can wait for now.

I just fixed a slow radiator leak as well. I had it that way since February of last year. True that you don't need to run and get it fixed but you had better hope your expansion tank sensor is working right and you don't run out of fluid in the middle of nowhere. Bad news for the engine. Carry an extra gallon of coolant in the rear just in case and check it regularly. The radiator does NOT have to be LR OEM. I bought one on eBay for $102.95 and it was a perfect match of excellent quality.

When you decide to change it, also change the hoses and the thermostat while they are at it.
