will Haldex pump from Volvo work in LR2
Hi!
I have a 2008 LR2 with a failed Haldex pump. When I bought the car a while back, I was given a new aftermarket Haldex pump from a 2008 Volvo XC90 and while it would bolt in (with minor interference with the pump's plastic fluid filter), I'm curious if the pump would function properly. The previous owner was told that it would but I don't really trust the previous owner or their mechanic.
The pump I was given is a Dorman #699002. Physically, the pump is a little shorter than the original LR part. I'm not sure if that implies that it's a smaller/weaker pump.
My primary concerns are if the pump provides the necessary pressure to properly engage the Haldex clutch pack and does it communicate with the Haldex electronics properly?
Would "trying it to find out" damage the clutch pack or the haldex controller? maybe yes to both? I'm sure that if it doesn't provide enough pressure and allows the clutch pack to slip it would eat the clutch discs pretty quickly.
If it will work, I'd be happy to use it rather than shell out nearly $500 for the LR part (LR003147).
Anyone have any experience or thoughts?

Haldex gen3 pump.
Good question. It definitely is shorter. Ford made this model LR at the time. I would call Dorman and ask them? Or you can start the job, compare the two motors and go from there. I would think that LR/Ford selected their pump for a specific reason however. I could not find the Volvo part # but I did not do an in-depth search. The old pump can also be reconditioned, many kits are available.
EDIT: We also have a member here that owns a 2008 LR2 as well as a Volvo with the sister engine (don't know if it is the same gen haldex). @p_gill may be able to add some very useful info as he always does.

The Dorman web site says this part is incompatible with a 2008 LR2. (I didn't just use the table, I put in the year/model and it said no.)

My 2008 LR2 Gen III Haldex uses the pump that I put the purple box around (note: only the LR2 uses this pump)
Later LR2's use the fourth generation Haldex see the orange box for that generation the pump is used by Land Rover, Ford and Volvo.
Note: my 2010 S80 is FWD not AWD

Well... I took the "try it and see" approach! Since I had no use for the Volvo pump, I figured what the hell! I installed the Volvo pump from Dorman (#699002) and as I mentioned, the little filter had to be "adjusted" because it was too long to fit in the pump cavity. So, I just cut the end of the plastic filter off. I left it just a little long so it contacted the bottom of the pump cavity in the hopes that it would be somewhat of a tight enough fit to slightly crush the filter to act as an end cap in place of what I cut off. If it works great, if not, oh well, it was worth a try. After buttoning it all up and refilling the oil, it seems to be working! The error message on the dash is gone -- no codes registered and all traction modes are active again!! I was able to point the car up a steep snow covered slope and could actually see the rear wheels getting power as evidenced by the rear wheels spinning forward ever so slightly as they were trying to get traction. So, I call that a win -- for now!! We'll see how it goes!
I did reach out to Borg-Warner to see if they could provide the tech specs (operating psi, amp draw, and motor type (DC vs pwm -- I'm pretty sure both are DC)) for both pumps (LR vs Volvo). I'm hoping that both have the same operating PSI and amp draw although I suspect that the Volvo pump might be slightly lower PSI and amps due to the smaller motor.
I'll update if/when I hear back from BW or if the pump dies.

Absolute worst case would be to pick up a used Haldex from my local Pick-n-Pull where they actually have a 2008 LR2 in their yard and surprisingly they get them pretty regularly -- for now -- until they all die! Ha!

As a side note, This Haldex fix was a secondary fix that I did while I was replacing the rear diff to fix the (all too common) failed pinion bearing. I opted to buy a re-engineered diff from Bell Engineering in England! They take an old core and remachine it to allow for bigger pinion bearings that can actually handle the torque. Today was my first drive in the LR2 in almost a year and what a difference the new differential makes! The car drives quietly again -- no bearing whine!!!
I would highly recommend Bell Engineering if you have time to wait for a diff to be shipped from the UK! Austen is the man!

Yeah, that definitely crossed my mind but while it is 4wd, it is definitely not a rock crawler. I don't anticipate being in an unrecoverable situation. If it fails again, I'll find myself in the same situation I've been in -- with a FWD car that needs the $500 LR part. And if worse comes to worse, I can get it towed.

How long ago did you get the remanu diff from Austin?
I had ordered one from him just around a year ago (?) and he ended up not being able to ship it and ultimately refunded me. He said that twice the package was turned back by the carrier he thinks because of petrol fumes. I ended up getting one shipped from freelanderspecialist.com (amazing customer service BTW) and am currently driving on it. Rebuilt my original as a spare.
BTW, if you need to re and re the haldex in the future get the Gen 4 as they seemed to improve the design.

Good news on the haldex pump. At the first sign of trouble, pull the fuse on it and just drive in FWD until you get it sorted.

Unfortunately, due to increases in shipping costs in the recent past, I had to eat the core charge and his unreturned crate charge (about $350 combined) as it would have cost me more to ship the core back than those two fees combined. Even with that, I still feel like $1,200 total charge was a pretty decent price -- especially since I didn't have to pay someone to install it. I do have the luxury of not being rushed since it's not my daily driver.

Hmm... I was under the impression that G3 and G4 Haldex units were not interchangeable due to a difference in communication protocols between the Haldex controller and the ECM/PCM. I think I read that somewhere.
