Not exactly. There is a copy of the service manual that someone took a lot of effort to print out from an online service manual, probably land rover's topix service. It seems to be a fairly old revision and I've found some stuff in it that is just plain wrong. But it's better than nothing.
I'll see if I can find a link to it when I'm not on phone.

Pulled the drivers can cover here is a pic, drove it to dads bout 1/2 mile this noise is definitely a clacking, even cranking with the cover off sounds like when the exhaust came lobs hit the valves on that first cylinder, I do not see anything obvious nothing looks broke or scarred or discolored from overheating a part
Chains feel tight up top but no real clue what I am looking at never worked inside this type of engine before need some real guidance please, I plan to keep pulling it apart to access the timing set
Here is a pic of the area I believe the noise is coming from

thorgal got it thanks
compression test this morning had about 160 across all cylinders
spark plugs are definitely beat, look normal just been in there a lot of miles post pic later, all plugs look the same
I am obviously buying new ones since I need em either way, current plug

well no good news, had a rover dealer tech I know come by and listen to it, he has no clue, never heard that sound but thinks its deep in the engine possibly a cracked wrist pin s it is not timing set noise or lifter or vvt, it just baffles him cause it runs so smooth but is so loud and my compression test was good
so guess back to square 1 my options are pull and start tearing down the engine, try to find a used one at a good price or just sell it try to break even and start over
he does figure I can pull and fix the engine for 2k more or less since I am doing the labor unless it ends up being trash
