Default tensioner upgrade

Which tensioner did you replace? The main or secondary? I am following your post since I have the same noise but have not yet thrown parts at it. The tensiones were going to be my first shot as well since my alternator is only 4 months old I was looking at the coolant pump or A/C compressor as the next choices. I sear h for lr3 noises and found a lot of valve train problems none that sounded like ours.

Hope we get the answer soon.

Jeff

Default tensioner

i replaced the tensioner on the back that didn't have a lip on the roller and replaced it with the upgraded tensioner pulley and a new main belt. I did take the other 2 tensioners off and checked the rollers for resistance and they seem fine but what do I know.

Reviving this thread to see if any resolution from either of you. I have the same issue and been trying to track it down for some time. Its a belt squeal on cold start, only when it rains or heavy condensation. It goes away after 2-3 minutes. Based on my reading these symptoms typically point to a tensioner.

My next question is what are the part #s for the primary and secondary tensioner. I cant seem to find the secondary tensioner. I have one with a smooth pulley that runs on the back of the belt and another with a grooved pulley that runs on the front of the belt. However most part websites show both tensioners having smooth pulleys.

Any help appreciated.

Many thanks. Its either 6B209B or 6B209A. I cant tell if this image would be looking at the front of the engine. If so, the 6B209B would be in front and on the passenger side while the 6B209A would be on the driver side, and would require you take off the outer belt first.

The diagram is looking from the front of the car i.e. the small belt is the drive for the fan and the one behind drives all the other ancilliaries.

6B209A is pt Nº PQG500030

6B209B is pt Nº PQG500220

I was almost going to say they're worth changing as they're not too dear ($26.00 and $44.50 respectively in the UK), but then I looked up their price in the US from Miami British and was shocked $72 and $128 respectively.

If it was me I'd also consider doing the other pulleys. Take off the pulleys to get the pt Nºs off the bearings and replace them rather than fork out for complete pulleys (cheaper). In fact I did do all the bearing on mine about a year ago. You could also think about just doing the bearings on the tensioner pulleys, unless the spring end is shot.

Awesome. Many thanks.

I also got some clarification from Atlantic British that the new primary tensioner is flat, not grooved. This explains why it looks different. They said it was changed to prevent the exact cold start squeal im having...

I've read you need to trim the new tensioner to fit. However they mentioned that some customers had been able to install without any modifications. Any recommendations here?

Sorry pal, wasn't aware of the need to trim. I've still got the original tensioner and haven't had any problems with it. If you buy a new one, just fit it and see how it goes, never know you could be fortunate.

I went through this about a year ago. I changed ALL the pulleys and tensioners, and it quieted down and has stayed quiet since. I got them all from Advance Auto if I remember correctly.
