2006 LR3 4.4 Intake Cam Locked Up...Need Recommendations
Hello All,
I have a 2006 LR3 with a 4.4 I just purchased this through an auction with motor problems. The Left Bank Intake Cam seized up due to something getting into the Oil Galley. There was mainly one(bearing) that caused the seizure, but 2 more had light scarring. Whats my best approach, as my head and cam are both shot. Should I scrap the engine and find a used one, or start looking for a head and go through the work of replacing the head. and hope there is nothing else in the engine that is damaged.
I have not drained the oil yet, but I will do so tomorrow, as well as cut the oil filter open and take a look and find out what got in the system. Assuming I dont find anything significant, whats the opinion on the best course of action?
Engine has 144k on it. Should I be replacing timing components on this as well if I do the rebuild?

I've seen this a few times on this engine, and each time the cause of failure was oil starvation, with none in the crankcase.
If this is the case with yours, you would be better off grabbing a used engine then repairing what you see with the one you have, just to possibly find another issue once it's running.

I drained the oil and cut the filter. The oil level was fine, it appeared to be used oil, but still looked good. There was no metal in the filter at all. I guess the next step is to pull the remaining valve cover off and check the cams in the right side. If they look alright I will probably plan on getting a head and putting on. If there were oil pump issues with these, it would be great to know about it now. Please chime in anyone.

Thanks for your input gentlemen. I did pull the other valve cover, didnt find anything too worrying. There are a few cam bearings with some light scarring, but I dont think its enough to warrant pulling the motor. What the heck, I can go cheap now, and if it fails I can always stick the big money in a low mile motor if the car is that appealing to us.
Now I just have to find a driver side head and cams.....
Why do I always seem to buy the foreign cars with screwed up motors or trannys. I know, I'm a dutch bastard.
