Default 2008 LR3 Limited Gear Error

I have been battling with several issues lately with my LR3. Most of them stemed from a bad MAF which was replaced.

I still have a battery light and check engine light on.

About half the time I start the car, and mostly the first start of the day, I receive and error saying transmission issue limited gears and I get the large "F" on the dash. I turn the car off and back on and have never gotten the message the second start. Also, about once a month or so I get a bonet open message. A couple time over the past 6 months the car was difficult to start.

Battery? Alternator? Ground Wire?

I did meter the battery at idle and got about 13.7 V.

Thanks.

. . . so have you checked these 3 things?
voltage at idle is only a very small part of the story.

You need to check battery voltage after it sits a while so it can stabilize. Low battery starts often cause errors like that.

Checked battery voltage after sitting all weekend and vehicle not started. Got 12.5V. Not sure if this is good.

Started car and got the transmission error read 13.4V at the battery. Restarted car no error as usual and read 13.4 at the battery.

12.5 is good for standby. 13.4 is acceptable running. I would get the battery tested anyway, they can read good voltage but have a bad cell, not super common but it happens. Then move onto checking grounds and connectors of the ECUs behind the battery, if battery is not vented they can corrode. Oh, you may want to check the main/alternator/starter fuse for corrosion too. Its basically attached to eh battery via the positive post. All comes apart easily for inspection.

So I just started the car, after not starting for about 3 hours, and read 14.3V at battery (no transmission error). Battery light and Check Engine light still on.

Also, I really could not remember when the battery was replaced last but the date on the battery is 3/22/2017. I have read a lot of posts and this seems like it may be time to replace.

I have not found much corrosion, a little bit under the positive battery terminal, but no where else as of yet.

Additional information, I get a low coolant error on occasions but I am not low.

I am not one just to start randomly buying parts and throwing them on the car but I am about 90% ready to get a new battery. Unless someone talks me out of it.

Thanks.

I know there is probably a lot of opinions on this but with all the battery issues would someone like to recommend one?

I am seeing prices from $179-$350.

I cant help with brands but get an AGM type as these tend to last longer.

The AGM, when in an LR3, like a regular top-off from an AC-DC battery tender to stay fresh. Make sure you get an H8 size. This might be listed as an alternate, but it will fit! It’s not much more than the standard battery but wI’ll give you more reserve capacity.

Have you cleaned the small amount of corrosion from the positive terminal? The leads are tapered slightly, so the only way to get a good connection is to really push the clamps down hard before tightening.

Your bonnet latch sensor is probably going out, that’s a common problem.
