Anyone repower 4.4 v8 with Atlantic British rebuild?
Since upgrading to LR3 from Disco 1 3 years ago, my joy for LR versatility has only grown! My 08’ LR3 has been able to handle everything I’ve thrown at it from towing, transporting, storing, and safely getting home in middle of ice storm with style and comfort. I’m so impressed! Now with 208000 miles, I’m prepping for eventual day when this 08’ engine turns its last revolution. Last week I just discovered Atlantic British sells reman engine. Has anyone bought and installed this engine? Any experiences, tips, warnings to share?
thanks!
thanks!
wow that’s sweet to hear!! Will just keep maintaining and focus on upgrading/replacing other worn out things (headlights, grill, radio, seats, roof interior lining). I haven’t found much info on legacy if 4.4s so thanks for sharing.
For longevity of the engine, in addition to regular oil / coolant changes, I would recommend:
1. from time to time (each year?) look at your short term and long term fuel trends (you will need a good scan tool such as a GAP tool). If you see sections of the RPM and driving range where fuel trims are spiking or dropping (personally I don't worry too much about combined fuel trims in the +/- 5 range, but if I see +/- 10-15 or higher I start checking for possible issues), there may be something going on. The plastic intake components crack, and I have seen a hairline crack after the MAF before the throttle body cause a CEL for lean conditions. Watching fuel trims can also give you some insight on when sensors (MAF and O2) might be functioning but no longer operating as close to specs as they should.
2. coolant hoses, change them as needed, and particularly if they are the original coolant hoses. Overheating from low coolant can kill an engine very quickly. I have 222,000 miles on my LR3 and I just changed all the hoses. Cost about $600 (roverparts.com has a kit but note there are 2 small hoses on the throttle body you have to order separately) and it's an easy swap (ok, you have to be able to take off the reverse-threaded fan but that just requires the right tools) of all the hoses except for one small hose that runs under the intake manifold (which in my case I decided that it looked ok and for now I left it alone until I decide to rebuild the fuel injectors at a later date). Also, if the expansion tank is original, the float switch has probably lost its ability to float, and so you should replace that too (and also check that someone hasn't deactivated the "Low Coolant Warning").
