I have a 2007 LR3 with Ford Cologne 4.0L gasoline (petrol) V6 and am attempting to find out as much as I can about the engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor/sender, which on my machine is located in the sump (ladder rail) on the driver's side of the engine. When I replaced the engine I noted a number "4L3A12A648AB" on the original sender but I can't seem to locate any EOT sensor with that number. I am able to find many for the 5.4 V8 Ford "4L3Z12A648AA/AB" but am unsure if they are the same, trying to run down an intermittent starting problem. Any extra information anyone has on the EOT sensor/sender would be appreciated, thanks in advance...

 

As it is a Ford engine I would expect it would be available at a Ford dealership

 

Unfortunately, as it is the Land Rover version of the engine, the Ford dealer has no idea of what it is...

 

I think some versions of Ford Explorer and Mustangs used this but not totally sure. These versions of the LR were made by Ford

 

Yes, some versions of the Ford F150 and Explorers Expeditions with the 5.4L V8 engine had the 4L3Z type of engine oil temperature sensors, but I have not been able to find a used cheap one here yet, so I can compare. Am really interested in the thread size and resistance specs, what I know (or think I know) about the Land Rover version is resistances vs temperature; 620 ohm=60C, 255 ohm=90C, 117 ohm=120C, 60 ohm=150C and the thread size is M 19x1.5. Before buying a Ford 4L3Z type I'd like to know more about it, but that information is a tad hard to find, maybe I'll toddle over to the Explorer F150 forum...

Edit: 1500; RESOLVED (mostly) This appears to be an exact duplicate part for a Ford DY1025 or it's many substitute cousins, like the Standard Motor Parts TX131 or the WVE 5S7291 and the 4L3Z12A648AA/AB, please find attached a pdf file courtesy of WVE showing dimensions and thread sizes, when I finally get hold of one I'll be sure to update with some resistance measurements, etc.

 

Don't hold your breath on it fixing your issue. One of my wires was severed after reinstalling the engine and it would start and drive but sent everything to limp mode as the oil temp is a backup for the coolant temp sensor. I had a similar intermittent start issue and it was the starter.

 

This has only happened once, but got a P0196 Oil temperature sensor Range/performance after the intermittent start condition, so looking for information on this unusual condition, has not happened again but better safe than sorry. I did recheck the starter motor connections, thanks for the heads up, in Land Rover land I'll not be holding my breath...
