Everyone's getting 18-21 in their V-8 but me. I've had mine just about a year. Purchased with 85K and currently has 101K. I check my mpg by gallons added to tank / miles driven on last fillup. I'm only getting 13.2 - 14.7. Totally Stock. I guess it's time for a tuneup.

You get the same I do, around town, mixed driving. In only got higher teens on exclusively freeway driving with cruise control.

I suppose that the computer will get one result and the human will get another, it's all in how we do our math and the computer doesn't tell us what is taken into consideration for such calculations.

Perhaps the computer only figures that it should be calculated while in drive (does not account for when in reverse or for idle time - us Canadians get A LOT of idle hours!).

Another thing to be considered is payload/number of passengers. More weight means poor fuel economy. I'm sure by the time I upgrade my bumpers and start packing around the camping/overland gear I'll have to suffer with 8 MPG! lol

I do think its a nice vehicle...but compared to other used SUVs (land cruiser, jeep) seems to have a much more expensive track record. No shiftable transfer case compared to Disco might help on issues?

LR3 has a shiftable, two speed transfer-case.

I think the latest LR4 doesn't have it, or it is an option you have to pay extra for. Something like that.

On the LR3 when you select rock crawl mode it actually tells you to select low range too.

Now, a year later, thinking about a good 4WD vehicle. Also thinking that because of It being a new model w newer engineering and features, an LR3 might eliminate some of the inherent issues with the Disco II (three amigos, ABS, heads, computer) while retaining its charm and ability to drive in snowy dirt and mud roads. The first years, 05 to 07 (cheaper the better for me), is where I'm looking. It would probably be a daily driver, esp., in winter.
So....
1. Am I wrong? Is the LR3 going to be just as big of a service and financial nightmare as its charming Disco II cousin?
2. Should the V6 be considered for fuel economy? I will never be towing anything.
3. What are the big service issues with the LR3?
Thanks all.....??

We are in the same boat. I currently drive '03 Disco w/ 95K miles. I am looking for LR3. I drove the v6 and I personally thought it was very underpowered, one on-ramp to the expressway and I took it back to the dealer and ended the test drive. Gas is not much better because the smaller engine is just working harder to push the same weight. Currently looking at an '05 LR3 with 58K miles. Also, my '03 Disco has not been a financial burden. Yes, repairs can be expensive, but my last 24 month ownership cost (excepting fuel) has been $230/mo.

I'm thinking you'd like the power of an LR4. I think the power difference between the V6 LR4 and the V8 LR3 are noticeable, but if I were shopping at this point I'd consider the LR4. Only real drawback is that it cannot be fitted with a 32" tire (as easily) from what I understand. ...and that would only matter to you for off-roading purposes, and I'm not sure what you're looking for.
