Castrol Synthetic 5w/20 . Look for the MC #s on back that correlate to the required oil in the manual. Same oil as in the newer Ford trucks. Disregard the European oil statements as the Castrol has the designated LR #s.

I never have trouble finding oil, its generally on the ground underneath my Rover's.

In all seriousness 5w20 or 5w30 should be just fine

Default ILSAC GF-3 oils

The question of oils is what I term to be a black art - the discussion is even more difficult than the "what is the best tyre".

I use what I think the LR manual tends to call for, that be an older spec GF-3 oil for what is an older engine, that being in your case I presume the same engine as mine, the Jag AJ engine LR calls the 4.4 litre petrol V8.

Below is extracted from a Castrol pdf and is what is written on the back of a 5W-40 container. The newer design oils show GF-4 and greater, but I like to stick with the older oil. I think there may be some merit in my argument as Castrol attempted to discontinue the GF-3 oils and replaced then with newer names / specs but for some reason, (VW I think), restarted the "old" oil line production back up.

And as usual, any oil is better than no oil.

SAE 5W-40:
is engineered specifically to meet the Volkswagen engine warranty requirements, exceeding VW 502 00 and 505 00. Exceeds all car and light truck manufacturer’s warranty requirements for the protection for gasoline, diesel and turbocharged engines where API SL, SJ, SH, CF or CD is recommended. Porsche approved and also exceeds European ACEA: A3, B3, B4, MB 229.3, MB 229.1, BMW LL-98. Meets the engine protection requirements of Volvo, BMW, Mercedes Benz and ILSAC GF-3 for API Certified Gasoline Engine Oils.

Default Castrol almost a commodity now.

I recall when I purchased my 3, here one could only get Castrol in the 55 US gallon drum; now as you said, Walmart has Castrol by the quart. Come to think of it, there was no Walmart here either.

Castrol edge 5w-30

Yeah, walmart sells them in 1qt or 5qt containers. Normally I hate walmart but they had the best prices on the stuff. Did an oil change maybe 2k miles ago, checked later with techs at Tyson's LR and they said they recommend Castrol edge.
