Default HDC System Unavailable

Updated on May 7, 2024. update below post.
---

Hey Guys,

My apologies in advance if this is a redundant post (I've done my best to google and troubleshoot, but I can't seem to find any posts/advice with my particular set of errors).

I have a 2006 LR3 V8 with 105k miles. I've owned it for 2 years.

Recently, I started getting 3 error messages in the Main Message Center.

- HDC Fault System Not Available
- Park Brake Fault System Not Functional
- Check Brake Pads

On startup, intermittently (usually happens after the rig sits for a few days without use), I get the "HDC Fault System Not Available" message or the "Park Brake Fault System Not Functional" message (never at the same time). Neither message is persistent, they just flash once and then don't stay on in the message center, and neither is accompanied by any warning signals in the dash cluster. The HDC icons next to the HDC switch don't light up And the HDC System seems to be functioning properly. The Parking Brake always functions normally and I can engage or disengage the parking brake as normal and the parking brake indicator functions as normal (I installed the Atlantic British Parking brake Kit about a year ago). Other than the initial error messages displaying on startup, the rig seems to be operating completely normal. And neither messages persist after startup. And neither message displays with any kind of consistency. Maybe I get the "HDC System not available" message about 50% more than the Park Brake Fault message.

A few days ago, The "Check Brake pads" error message briefly came on while I was driving. The error message was so quick, I couldn't even read it before the Main Message Center went back to normal. Yesterday, I got the same message and it stayed on for about a second, before the Message Center went back to normal. When I receive the message, it isn't accompanied by any other warning signals in the dash cluster. I checked my service history, and I replaced the brake pads when I replaced my parking brake a year ago. But I did not replace the sensors.

I dont get any fault codes related to these three issues when reading the car via GAP ID Tool.

Just to give you an idea of my rig usage: I go easy on the rig. I drive about 12k miles per year and do no off-roading. The area I live in, the streets are pretty crap, when they're paved but most streets are either dirt or cobblestone, so it's nice to have a rig to deal with them. Most of my miles are highway miles.

Any advice on how to troubleshoot?

Update May 7, 2024:

For people with this same errors, as other commenters have mentioned: this was 2 issues: 1) being the battery was 4 years old and failing. This was causing the 2 startup errors: HDC fault and Park Brake Fault. I switched out the battery and those two faults are gone (yay!). The 3rd fault, Check Brake Pads, is still there. I need to go to my brakes guy and have it checked. Will update with what I find. I assume it's a failing sensor and that the year old brake pad is still good. could be wrong.

The HDC and parking brake messages are probably due to a low battery. After cranking the battery is lower than the computers like so you get the messages. I would test / change the battery. The brake pads worn, have you looked at your brake pads? That is a pretty simple circuit and if your brakes are worn and juuuuuuuuust starting to hit the sensor the message can be intermittent for short bit before going on full.

^ Yup. So you have two issues. Brake pads are probably due, but unrelated to other issues.

Yes, I'm going to check the brake pads. But do you really think the pads could burn in one year? seems too soon for casual use. but yes, getting in there and checking will tell.

Ok, I'll go have the battery checked asap.

I also did see some info about HDC fault messages coming from the alternator starting to go (fluctuations in voltage). But I didn't want to lean too hard in that direction before I got feedback. Battery is first to check, though if I'm not mistaken, I changed the battery about a year ago as well.

Yes, pads can if you have sticking calipers or cheap parts. I tend to go Brembo but ended up with a super cheap set of rear pads I needed when a caliper stuck and took out a Brembo set. Those pads did not last long, well under a year.

I installed EBC Greenstuff performance pads from Atlantic British. Hmmm. I gotta get in there and check.

I never used em, but I have a stockpile of those to install next. Were both sensors new?

Hey guys, thanks for all the good feedback. I had my battery checked. and sure enough it was 4 years old and going bad. Had build-up on the negative connector. Switched out for a new battery and the 2 startup faults are gone. Yay! (I'm happy it's not the alternator that was going which was my suspicion).

Now to get brake pads checked. Thanks everyone.

Awesome! But be cautious with the new battery, corrosion on the negative is actually a sign of undercharging and can in fact indicate the alternator is dying. Four year old battery is not really that old, I have had batteries easily last much longer. The key to that is to open the cell caps (if applicable) and top off the battery with distilled water. In fact, many "dead" and "bad" batteries are simply low on water and topping em off brings em right back. You can also boil batteries to bring em back sometimes (YouTube it). Anyway, just keep an eye on things to make sure all it well.

FYI, corrosion on positive battery terminal means overcharging, as if the alternator is putting out way too much lightning volts.
