Help...what should I do???????
Ok im probably going to get shot for this but I have a question. I have seen many LR3 for under $25000. Now my issue is I was looking at the fj cruiser (reason Ill probably be shot) but am not 100% convinced I like the vehiacle. I like what the toyota offers but not so much for the style, its just not me. The LR3 looks excelent, is more my style and is cheap as hell these days. Im lookin at a few used ones. The only problem I have is the reliability. Land Rover has been slammed for years in regards to their reliability issues, This is the one thing holding me back and still considering the toyota.
So I guess my question is....are they really that bad? Will I get stuck on the freeway every morning? Will my car break down on a trail trip? Will it spend more time in the shop than in my garage? What should I do?
Has anybody here had any problems? If so how long did it take to fix? Are the problems serious issues such as the trans going out or simple things like brake squeal?

I own a 2005 LR3 and I have had to have the air suspension fixed, the rear hatch fixed and the transmission adjusted. Other than that, it has been a pretty reliable truck (knock on wood). Here is a thread similar to the one you have started:

most of the issues with the t5 platform, both lr3 and the sport, were problems off the bat. air susp had problems, but once the upgrade to the compressors were done, very few problems. there were several issues with software conflicts, that caused things from stalling, to ses lights to vibrations, but once again, once they were done, the issues were gone. ive seen 1 engine and 2 transmissions go bad, and only one of the trans's was something that should have been avoided(the other had a leak that wasnt noticed til there was no more fluid and the clutches were toast) and the engine that went was from overheating due to a hose that leaked out 100 miles before the customer decided to stop. if you get one, just stay on top of standard maintenance, like with all rovers. regular oil changes are key, and rotate the tires and get it aligned often, theyre real heavy and the air susp system will cause the alignment to constantly change
thanks. from reading online it seems that alot of the problems were present from day one. and like you said after the upgrades most problems went away. I also read somewhere that 85% of all land rovers produced are still on the road today. That seems pretty good. Looks like im gonna get one.
Im going to buy a used one. Would you guys reccomend purchasing the factory extended warranty?

On our 2005 LR3, the transmission issue was present when we bought it as a loaner (I didn't catch it on the test drive), but it was just a quick adjustment with the computer. As for the air suspension and back hatch, both those issues occurred around 45,000 miles. Be sure to take it on a long test drive both on the highway and in the city. Good luck on your purchase.
congrats... and as to the warrenty, yes, i strongly recomend it. easycare is a good company, owned and opperated by landrover... but just a couple minor repairs can easily add up to more then youll pay for the coverage
