Can anyone give me a process to clean the MAF and what chemical to use? Do you remove it and just spray it? Clean it with a rag? Seems kind of delicate from the pictures I've seen on this forum.

Will there be any special process when it's reinstalled - codes, disconnect/reconnect battery, etc?

 

I haven't yet cleaned the maf on my lr3, so I'm not speaking from experience, but I've done it on both of my D2 with good results. Use MAF cleaner. The stuff I bought was CRC brand. Do it completely cold and let it dry before turning it on. Because most current MAF detect air flow by measuring electrical differences between a hot wire or film and a cold one. You might damage the hot wire with the very cold MAF cleaner spray.

 

On the LR3, remove the sensor body, disconnect it, and spray it down. The actual air flow sensing element is up inside the housing, the 'bulb' at the bottom is the intake air temp sensor, which is really all that gets dirty. I use BG brand, but that can be hard to find retail. But you spray it down a few times, and let it fully dry, for longer then you think it will take. Reinstall it, and start it up, the fuel trims will adjust themselves if they were out of whack from it being dirty.

 

And the "do it cold" is important, as some designs heat part of the sensor to 350 degrees above ambient. This happens when key is turned on to position 2. So just fiddling with key can warm up a sensor that has been cold all night. Don't crank up truck, back out of garage, and turn off. Sensor element will still be hot for a while.

 

The only spray you want to use is called CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner.

just wanted to chime in. I had been having issues with restricted performance warning and check engine light so did some research and general consensus was to clean MAF sensors
cleaned them last night (both of them) and now do not get warning
cleared CEL and it has not come back on
engine is running smoother
purchased CRC MAF cleaner spray some wipe cloths at O’reilleys
took me about 30 minutes
be sure to let the sensors dry before putting them back

 

There is only one sensor on the LR3...
