We bought a 07' LR3 HSE and it doesn't have a jack in it. The manual shows a scissor jack. Our DII had a bottle jack. Is the factory scissor jack any good or is a bottle jack the way to go?

 

The LR3 scissor jack is known to be pretty crap. Many owners and I include myself as one of the many, have had problems with it.

I used mine once, got it fully extended, but must have been on Viagra or something, as it never came down and I had to break out the trolly jack to get it out. Fortunately I was at home and not miles away in the country of on the motorway.

The problem seems to be that the threads in the screw mechanism strip and seize while in use.

A telescopic bottle jack might be better but it needs to be able to locate in the chassis as the supplied jack would and not just sit under it as it could easily slip.

I haven't replaced my jack as I don't carry a spare, having no space for it as my LPG tank is there instead.

 

Did you look in the right rear compartment?

I, personally, do not carry a spare either. The main reason is that I went to oversize tires and didn't want to spend the money on a fifth rim (wheel) and tire. This seems silly at first, but knowing that the factory location is too small for a 33 inch tire means that one would have to find a mounting location as well. Also, my spare tire winch has failed twice, likely due to our long Canadian winters and the salty ice melter used on our roads.

I recently purchased a welder so I plan to build a rear bumper carrier and purchase a wheel when I get a new set of tires. I will use one of my current tires as my spare.

My luck so far has been good, no flats on either set of tires (winter or summer) and never left stranded, but it is bound to happen some day. I have a tire repair kit with plugs and patches, but I don't have an air compressor to reinflate with.

Back to the thread; The factory jack will not extend high enough to lift the vehicle with the lift kit and taller tires, so I carry a bottle jack. I will also carry a high lift style jack on the bumper (with the spare) when I get to building that rear carrier.

 

Stupid question and guess I need to look at the jacking directions but don't you just jack by the lower a arm to replace a tire?, I go to the frame cause I am using a large floor jack, this truck is so heavy a cannot imagine that scissor jack picking it up

Yup that's a good reason jack strips out , my big floor jack has a hard time lifting like that

 

Can any one suggest a good bottle jack? I purchased a Torin 6 ton via Amazon and it doesn't seem like it would lift high enough.

 

Just get a tow truck... Least of your problems are a flat.. Just wait until the TCM goes nuts....
