Looking for an LR3 - SE/HSE diff and 3 amigos
Grrrrrrr - confirmed rear differential noise. Going to vent some: Long story, but I didn't get to drive the car before the wife bought it. She was fine with it and Green Oval was fine with it. I was apprehensive, she made the call. A few minutes in the car I knew there was an issue. My brain was saying "Let it be a wheel bearing..." How the hell did they miss this? It's not subtle!! Thanks. Now feel better.
So what are my options assuming the diff is bad? I know the dealer likes to replace them. Are rebuilds possible? Anybody done so who can share their experience and cost?

Agreed 50k miles is not a good life expectancy. I got closer to 90k out of mine. The bigger problem was the fluid change interval (should be more like 15k miles than 75k or 90k or whatever LR was suggesting) and more specifically the low oil volume of both differentials.
i wish someone could say this is why they go bad so do that to fix it instead of oh just change the fluid more, there has to be a legitimate reason the fluid goes bad and the rear goes bad
my dodge ram has 265000 + and i maybe changed the fuid 1 time 100000 miles ago wtf!!! why can't rover engineers do thier friggin job right? to buisy in the pub takin a **** i suppose

Why? I think it'd be better the other way, knowing that there is nothing inherently wrong with the mechanicals inside the diff, but that they are under-lubricated....so in order to mitigate that, the fluid needs to be re-freshed often. Maybe I just don't understand your deal.
This is why they go bad: They don't contain enough oil.
This is what you do to fix it: Change the fluid more often.
There....good?
