Default LR3 4.4 L oil pan

The threads on the oil pan are stripped. Is there a solution other than a new pan?

Loanrangie, Thanks, a coil was my thought but I 'm not familiar with the process and didn't know if one is available or how to size it. And of course the Land Rover is at a shop for an oil change amongst a variety of other service items. Fortunately the shop called and they were able to insert something similar to a coil. Since the car is still at the shop I'm hoping for the best.

Best bet is have a shop (or do it yourself if you're comfortable) drill it out and tap it for a slightly larger bolt

Tapping the hole for a different bolt is a good idea and maybe the strongest repair but it's beyond my under car ability and of course the Land Rover is at a shop and if they couldn't/wouldn't tap it they wouldn't let the vehicle out leaking so the coil like insert is my call and hoping for the best.

If/when you get that fixed, you might want to replace the oil plug with a quick drain plug. Like one from Fumoto or Femco (there are other brands too).

Kajtzu, I considered a Fumoto drain valve but the problem was timing. The car is at the shop, the drain plug is out, the inner threads are stripped and a correct size Heli coil is unknown. I discussed this with the shop before they found an insert that worked. So at this point since it's apparently not leaking I have time to explore other options.

You can also buy slightly oversized/self-tapping plugs that fix some thread issues
Not sure it would work for you, just letting you know they exist

I did something like a Fumuto drain on my '05....but it was a self-designed deal. I had a local machine shop tap a hole in an OEM drain plug, then connected that to a stainless steel 90d elbow with a drain cap. Then we permanently installed the tapped drain plug (JB Weld + it threaded fine, was just near its end). Then used loc-tite on that stainless elbow into the drain plug. The cap freely spins on and off. The nice thing is that the rotation to remove the cap is out of plane with the drain plug so it doesn't torque that at all. The not nice thing is that the hole is smaller so it takes longer to drain the oil.

On my '06 we used a Land Rover (dealer) provided insert. It's a little fancier than a conventional helicoil.

Both work fine.

I put in a Femco a few years ago. The oil changes since have been way less messy. The plug stays in place, only the top/hat is removed. I have a 90 degree bend in the brass part which is connected to a short hose. It doesn’t remove completely the oily mess since there is always some left in the filter.
