After 170K my LR3 started leaking oil. Diagnosing is a priority for me because I plan to fix it myself, and I am not a mechanic, just love this car and want to work on it.
After each drive, it leaves a 2-inch mark under the car in the front.
You may have multiple leaks. The lower oil leak looks like a filter not on tight and or the "8" oil filter housing adapter gasket. Link to the gasket below. It is a very easy gasket to replace as it only requires taking off two bolts and moving the assembly enough to replace it.
The other leak higher up almost looks like a small coolant leak from the water pump, but its very hard to tell. Typically there are no oil leaks from the front of the engine that high up unless from the sides of the valve covers or VVT solenoid gaskets - which are on each side and sit onto the valve cover towards the front.
Hi Dakota - thank you for taking the time to help me out.
I'll change the filter housing adapter gasket soon.
1) Do I have to dump all the oil to change it?
2) By chance, do you have a link to the instructions or YouTube video on how to change it?
PS: I've owned LR3 since 2014 and love it like my wife lol. When it breaks completely, I'll find another LR3/LR4. Hopefully it will last for another 10 years.

For the '8' oil filter housing gasket you do not have to drain the oil. You will lose some oil but not much. Other possible fluid leaks are a) power steering b) ATF cooler lines c) coolant leaks from water pump or coolant routing pipes / thermostat / coolant temp sensor. I had a US driver side valve cover gasket oil leak that was leaving oil on the driveway every night; I was surprised at home much oil the valve cover can leak and still have a good air seal. The crank seal is another possible leak source but I don't think that one is particularly common, at least not as common as the oil filter housing gasket and the valve covers.
I cant find the specification for those specific bolts, but good and snug should be fine. I did not torque mine to any specific specification. If I had to guess a spec, I would say 7 to 10 ft lb. Since its pretty easy to do these, maybe just remove the bolts and make sure it did not slip on install.
I have had to redo my oil filter housing gasket a few times. This last time I did it I detached the oil filter assembly entirely (note: the coolant lines can be difficult to remove from this, and I would drain the coolant ahead of removing the filter housing) and cleaned it up. For the mating surface on the filter housing, there was a lot of oil buildup and so after brushing and cleaning it with break cleaner, I flattened it with 400 grit sand paper and WD40 on a flat granite stone. Together with scotch pad cleaning of the engine block connection point, it seems to be holding oil better now.
