Hi, new to LRs and been trying my best to get my ‘06 SE project moving. Help, tips, jokes making fun of me for even trying to fix this, etc are all welcome!!
Bought a project LR3 with a severe slipping trans, which hardly moved in gear if at all (intermittent). Already did a valve body rebuild and replaced all the solenoids and rubber on the lower end of the ZF. Swapped in a metal pan and new filter, and changed the fluid (not a complete flush). That got me moving slightly better for a moment. At ~3K rpms it slightly moved - while slipping forward then seemed to get better be sounding like something was binding or not quite engaged. After about 150 yards, it faulted and shut off. I then discovered the TCCM was corroded from water damage, and cleaned up and swapped that out. Now, I can’t even seem to get the trans to engage in any gear. Trans oils looked pretty brown/black, so I drained and refilled it to see if that might help. No luck. It’s also arranged because on this fluid refill, after I warm it up to 40 degrees C and shift through the gears then go back to put more fluid in, it won’t take anymore, but the 1st time I filled it up I could feel it engage and could add more.
GAP team thinks it might be a mechanical issue and not electrical. But the new transfer case module does not seem to be recognized [getting this fault - [color=#000000]U1A35-4A (2F) VIN data - System internal failure - incorrect component installed], GAP team said this should cause any issues. Thoughts on next steps to DIY this one?
Was the module configured using a diagnostic tool or ideally the OEM software? I am not familiar with the gap team but they may not have given you the full fault description . Did you install the module your self or did a shop do it?
@Nucleus The module was not configured. I read that sometimes they can be plug and go without configuring, so I installed it myself (same model year version of the TCCM). I guess that’s not the case here. I do have a ‘fast lane’ credit with GAP to get the right module config to install it. It was strange they said that wasn’t an issue with the code, so that gave me pause to do it. Think that issue could not allow the transmission to engage in any gear too?
I have experienced issues with the TCCM not successfully running through important routines following configuration that have left them unable to move, Do you have the ability to do a full fault read out on the vehicle? I myself can only recommend using the factory diagnostic equipment to configure the module, but who knows GAP might do it just fine and that would be my first step.
Ok, so TCCM ECU was updated to the vehicle. No more fault, but same issue with not engaging into gear. Thought on maybe clutch plates or toasted torque converter? Before I drop the trans, any other thoughts?

Did you make sure that the shifter rod was correctly located in the plastic slider when refitting the valve body ?
I believe so, but I’ll check again. There’s another thought a local shop had on the metal pan conversion mod. He said sometimes that mod causes issues with the filter being seated properly or possibly falling off, which will make the trans pump not work. I’ll drop the pan and check both.

Filter cant fall off as the pan holds it in place but its possible that the seal on the tube didn't come out with the old one so it doesn't seal properly.
^ I second everything loanrangie is saying. The filter can not slip off and the shift linkage can present issues in odd ways. Case in point, when I got my LR3 I quickly started to have an issue with what I thought was neutral flares while taking corners. Not sure why corning make the issue present itself. There were no codes, no faults displayed on the cluster. But simply lubricating the shift linkage, advice from this forum, solved the issue as it has not been a problem for years and I regularly lubricate it - new bushing set on hand if ever needed too. But essentially the cable would bend and bind up changing the geometry enough to cause the issue. So it does not take much for the transmission to be out of gear when it comes to the linkage.
