Our key has failed losing its square inside button as shown. So need OEM complete now.
Have any of you gotten a new replacement at dealer for a somewhat less price than ..normal ?
I've read prices dealer to dealer vary.
Can you tell me which dealer and how much it was.
Basically where can I get an OEM new one (case battery etc) for the least cost. Im in New Jersey we bought it at a Land Rover dealer as a 2 year old certified car..but can mail it as well.
It is the original key with all the information on the side of key.
Thank you so much.
As long as the key works to start the Rover, you can produce extra keys with a GAP tool. The tool itself is often cheaper than going to the dealer for one key. Entire fobs with blank key can be had for $20. They do vary in quality. You can transfer the cut key to the new OR most locksmiths can copy it. FYI, the info on the side means nothing as even the cheap copies have that too.

But the actual button on the circuit board (pictured previously) is lost.Switching this circuit board to another case won't work as button which opens door is lost now.

Oops..didn't spot the missing button. You will need a replacement with the circuit board. There's lots of inexpensive ones on Ebay and Amazon.
I just got this scanner at a much better price than the GAP tool. Has much of the same features including programing keys.

Not sure why I am being quoted, I said nothing about keeping the old board, less the key itself. New fobs come with new boards. Just make sure they are 315MHz. The board consists of two circuits, one for the buttons and one for the RDIF security for starting. The buttons can be totally wrecked and not work but the security part is separate. So as long as that fob will start the truck, it can be used to make more keys with a GAP tool or the like.
Yes the key starts the truck.(LR3 V8 2006)
So the lowest cost high quality case/key unit can be bought with the circuit board in there ...but with the same self recharge battery as this original has ?
All it needs is key cut (or original key switched over) and programed ?
Where do I get a high quality key case with circuit board and self charge battery..any idea ?
As you mention quality varies.
Gap IID tool is $500-525..good key $28 and then have the key cut by Locksmith.
Same cost as one new key from dealer.
Land Rover Dealer I called will not work with anything but original
JLR Key..so they won't program one I get from elsewhere.
So least costly option is someone with a GAP IID Tool needs to program it..($?)
a key or two from Lucky 8 $28 each and key/s cut by locksmith ($?)
I wonder if any quality difference between the OEM fob from dealer and ones from Lucky8 ?
Does anyone know how long it takes to program a key withe the GAP tool ?
I have had good luck with me eBay keys.
First one died after a year, but so cheap I didn't care - going on 2yrs on my 2nd key.
My local Ford dealer cut my key, so there's an option if you have trouble finding a locksmith.
Definitely do some homework to buy the best recommended "cheap" key so you can have a better chance for charging and longevity.
Mine happened to have Panasonic rechargeable inside. Others have received non-chargeable batteries, or fobs with no charging circuitry.
Unfortunately my seller is no longer listed.
Programming takes just a couple minutes.
The bonus to DIY with a IIDtool is that you keep the IIDtool for everything else you will eventually use it for, saving tons of $$.
Don't sleep on the Launch scanner hockey steve linked to. I haven't used that exact one, but their line of make specific scanners is excellent in my experience. I'll be trying this one out soon.
So, Launch scanner + key blank = ~$150
If you want the new key blank cut instead of swapping in your old one, it's easy to get that done by mailing the new key to an ebay seller who can cut the key based on a good photo of your old one for around $25. Search for 'laser key cutting service'.
