New to Land Rovers and the one I have wont move

Alright, I am new to Land Rovers. While browsing an auction sight I saw a 2006 LR3 SE V6 that looked nice. I did not read any description and just placed a $100 bid above where it was currently at. Well, I now have me a 2006 LR3 SE V6:D. I received it this evening, and on the windshield it says "air bags, drive shaft, axle?" It wont go in to gear. I am thinking transmission. When I try to put it in drive it makes a sound but nothing is engaging. The engine starts and runs great. It just wont engage. Does anybody have a starting point? Thanks in advance.

Check to make sure i has driveshafts or axles. it could also be a dead transfer case

When you move the shifter on the instrument cluster does the it change from park reverse drive etc? Any warning lights on or messages?

yes it shows shows up on the display when I move through gears. The error message on the display says “transmission fault Limited gears available”. The Hi Lo lights by the shifter are blinking.

ArmyRover 10-30-2018 07:11 PM

the hi low lights is the transfer case range switch. Don't suppose you have a gap tool or similar? We need pull codes to see what the system is telling us

Oh yes I do! As you can see it has 108,565 miles on it so It might be worth pouring some funds into her. I am already in too much to take a loss. So I have decided to just make it my off road vehicle/toy. This will be a long process, but I would like to get her road worthy. I will invest in the GAP tool. A part of me just wants to have it towed to the dealership in Nashville just to "rip" the band aid off to see just how bad she is.

ArmyRover 10-30-2018 08:42 PM

Lol get the gap tool it will pay off. Both if of mine are over 150k and going strong.

I almost wonder if it's the transfer case module. Behind the battery up by the firewall is a silver module with three connectors. Pull them loose and look for corrosion. If it's there pic up some electrical connection cleaner and a soft bristle toothbrush to clean it up cost it with dielectric grease reconnect. Than do a hard reset and give it a go

I’m in Nashville as well and would not recomment the dealer. There are a few indy shops around that would likely be your best bet. The folks on this forum are far more educated than any shop. Let them help first and go from there.

Thank you for all your help. There is some tom foolery going on with my LR. There is water in the carpets of the front passenger side, and rear passenger side. Someone might have spilt a drink, or left the windows down while it was waiting for auction. I will post some more pics tomorrow. It is a great looking vehicle. The carfax shows a minor rear end accident. I searched the rear frame, and nothing is bent/off. It does have two Nitto Terra grapplers on the rear, and two different tires on the front. My estimation is it has been sitting for possibly a year or so???

Again thanks for your replies.

That is what I was afraid of. I am in Clarksville, and there are a few off road shops like Motofix that I might tryout. Sadly nothing dedicated to the LR's.

Ed’s British 4x4 is a reputable shop here. There is another one that slips my mind. I’ll look for it and post here.

Water ingress where you describe is somewhat common. Definitely check the tcm module. Also do what you can to dry out the passenger side water can stand in the rocker and play hell with electrical stuff as the main harness is in there.

Sunroof drains or windshield cowl leaks or a pillar trim can cause the water

kenneypj1 10-31-2018 04:46 PM

Once you get the GAP tool find the live value for the transmission output shaft and see if it is spinning when the transmission is engaged

livfreely 10-31-2018 05:49 PM

livfreely 10-31-2018 05:53 PM

I can go through all the gears and the display still reads them. When I put it back in P I hear a “slight grind” noise. Still no engagement through any gear.

here is how low it sits.

any water in the passenger side rocker channel where the harness lays?

water on on the passenger side floor going in to the rear passenger side floor. I have shop towels soaking the water up.

ArmyRover 10-31-2018 07:52 PM

leaf blowers work great to help it dry out just sayin

Where are you located?

I put a portable heater in there tonight

I will have the leaf blower going tomorrow.

I am in Clarksville, TN

If you were near I would have scanned your truck for you. I bet a few more lights disappear when that wiring gets dry.

The low coolant light could be low fluid level or the level sensors are known to go out. Somewhat common failure. Suspension is definitely on the bump stops.

Man I need to vacuum...

Wiring harness and channel is under there

livfreely 10-31-2018 09:22 PM

I will be doing that tomorrow as well. Do you have a picture of your fuse box by your battery? Some of my fuses may be in the wrong order/missing.

ArmyRover 10-31-2018 09:38 PM

Don't know if that would help much as I have a V8 and no EAS. If I get a chance I'll see what I can do though

5280LR3 10-31-2018 10:36 PM

No fuse box cover? There is a layout of the fuses and relays on a decal on the underside of the cover. Same for V8 & V6. You may not need to have all of them installed as some are for options you may not have. I guess there are two of us now that have the lowly V6... Once you get the lights/trans/etc figured out you'll want to replace the cam chain tensioners. They need to be done around the 70K milestone. Nobody seems to do them until the chains start making noise. Not hard to do if you're mechanically inclined. One more thing for down the road: Non matching tires are a no go. The fronts need to match right down to the tread depth. Mine would not upshift out of 3rd gear with about a 5/32" difference between left and right front tires. Same brand and model. Not sure about rears. Ideally, they should all be the same. Best of luck!

The above noise was when the transmission was in drive.

kenneypj1 11-12-2018 03:56 PM

so does it feel/sound like it's coming out of the transmission or the transfer case? I would guess transfer case since that is what you are videoing. If you plan to keep the vehicle I would highly recommend getting the GAP IID tool. It will allow you to see the speed of your output shaft, among other things

Just hooked up the GaP ID tool. Had a lot of faults. I cleared them, and here is the fault for the transfer case.

What is needed?

livfreely 12-01-2018 12:56 PM

Here were the other faults that did not clear.

That does not sound happy at all.

Is the gear display on the dash matching what you are selecting? It almost sounds like the parking pawl is partially engaged

The gear display on the dash does match what I am selecting.

kenneypj1 12-02-2018 08:40 AM

Go to line values>transmission > output shaft speed. Is it spinning when you try to move the car? If it is you can pretty much eliminate the transmission for the immediate problem, unless the output shaft is stripped

Sounds like your transfer case might be stuck between high and low? When you shift it does it sound like it’s worknng?

livfreely 12-02-2018 03:32 PM

Here are the three readings from the transmission output shaft speed. N, D, and R.
