Haha DakotaTravler, your last post only just now showed up for me - I see we did the same research

sh74, is it possible you have a D4/LR4 and not a 3? (This is an LR3 thread.) The 4 has that battery monitoring system:
https://www.expedition-parts.de/en/b...eim-discovery/
But it isn't present on any D3/LR3 as far as I know...

This thread is less than 3 months old, so within the statute of limitations!

One new element/story to add. I was out wheelin' in my '05 (NOT the vehicle being referenced in this post, up until now). I run an AGM battery in that, which I struggle to keep topped up. I put it on a charger every 12 days or so and it probably discharges about 50% in between charges. I should probably just keep it on the charger all the time. I also may want to switch to an EFB type batt, but I digress. So I'm off-roading....and I tend to turn off the ignition when I stop to spot people or whatever. I know this taxes the battery too, as it takes so much juice to start the vehicle and takes a while to recharge via alternator. So yeah, my battery is probably not real happy by the time I'm done wheelin'.

I pull over to the staging area afterward to go back to stock height settings. Against my better judgment and kind of just wanting to see what would happen, I plugged the IIDTool in while the vehicle was running. CHRISTMAS TREE!!! Exactly like the behavior of the '06. So I pulled the negative cable and aired up my tires. Then buttoned it all up, put the EAS back to stock and drove home. All was fine, it's just another data point and I do think that plugging in the IIDTool while the vehicle is running is a no-no, especially if the battery is on the weak side.

Cheers, Houm

I plug in mine often when running. But one thing I learned not to do was clear codes when running. That creates all sorts of weird stuff.

...with a suspect battery though?

I just put a new batt in the '06, maybe I should try it.

Just another data point:

I plug my IID tool in frequently at the end of a drive while idling in my driveway, especially if I’ve done some maintenance, and have not had a problem with reading codes or looking at live values triggering dash lights. Twice however, I have had the engine start aggressively idling at 1000 or so rpm immediately after clearing faults. I had the same thing happen once on my wife’s XC90 after I cleared DTCs while it was idling. I agree with @DakotaTravler clearing faults while running can cause all sorts of weird behavior. In all instances of the high idle I shut the car off and it was fine on restart. With the LR3 the codes weren’t engine related in either instance.

Thanks for that.

I have observed it 3 times on 2 different LR3s. There has to be something to it. I'll take more data. Since the '06 has a fresh battery, I'll try plugging in the GAP while running and see what happens.

I do it all the time, sometimes sitting at lights and never had an issue but mine is an 08 and i believe they updated the CANBUS in 07 or there abouts.

I've had an issue when plugging in the GAP tool while running, once out of maybe 50 times. Mine is an 08 btw

Default Another data point

I plugged the IIDTool into my running '06 today, fresh battery. No Christmas Tree. Same rig that produced it twice under the same conditions when the battery was weak.
