Default No Start after Coolant Sensor Replacement

Hey Community,

My 2005 LR3 was struggling for a few days and the Gap tool said the coolant sensor was the culprit. From what I have read it was causing the vehicle to run rich and leading to misfires in cylinder one. The aux fan was also on all the time on high by the end.

I replaced the coolant sensor today and gave the throttle body a bit of a clean as well. When I put it all back together the LR3 wouldn’t start. There are no engine codes or anything, but it just won’t start at all.

the starter tries, and the engine will fire up, only to sputter out immediately each time. I only unplugged the MAF sensor and coolant sensor, and they are both reconnected.

It started and ran before I replaced the sensor and messed with the throttle body. Now not so much. Could the engine be flooded or something? Does the throttle body need adapting after cleaning?

I have reset the vehicle and the adaptations using the GAP TOOL.

Does anyone have any idea what’s going on here?

Did you reset engine adaptations? I would. After that you need to inspect the harness/plugs for the sensors to be certain a contact did not slide out, etc.

Thank you for getting back to me! I did reset the adaptations, and I have gone over each plug. There are no engine codes either to indicate that a plug was loose.

Did you coal the MAF? Have you disconnect and reconnected both sensors? Forget a vacuum line? Seems like its going to be something simple/obvious. Maybe post a pic of the engine bay.

did ypu disassemble the throttle body or move the butterfly by hand while cleaning it? If its out of where it thinks it's supposed to be it may cause those problems.

I only disconnected the line from the intake boot, the MAF sensor, and the coolant temp sensor. I will try and clean the MAF today and see. There really isn’t anything else to disconnect.

I absolutely did move the butterfly by hand. I also think that somehow this is the issue, but other than resetting the adaptations and resetting the vehicle using the GAP TOOL, how can I readjust the throttle body?

I manipulate mine a ton when cleaning. There should be no reason why it would be the issue, that is why there is a position sensor for the plate. You do NOT, however, want to adjust it without the proper tools and specs.

I had read on the interwebs not to move the butterfly when cleaning the TB, so it must be true?
There was also a warning on the cans of throttle body cleaner saying not to use it on the MAF. So in my case I have a mostly full can of MAF cleaner and the empty can of TB cleaner went off to recycle . If you didn't mess with the MAF it doesn't matter of course.

So I cleaned the TB again opening the butterfly and getting rid of a bunch of build up.

charged the battery and the engine still won’t start. It will catch slightly and won’t start.

could it be that the spark plugs are ruined? Before I changed the temperature sensor it was misfiring on cylinder 1 constantly.
