Default Odd issues, maybe parking brake actuator

It only happens every so often however when you put it in Reverse the back wheels seem locked up and it won't move backwards but a few inches or so. However you can move forward with no problem. Even in Neutral the LR3 will not roll backwards freely.

the 3rd time it happened, thinking it was parking brake related, I released the parking brake by pulling the cable under the cup holders, removed the parking brake fuse and it hasn't happened since. Maybe a coincidence, however I have no idea.

Could it be a bad actuator? Part is around $1,000 and don't really care to spend the money to fix it as I very seldom use the parking brake anyway.

Any thoughts are appreciated......

Seems odd that it only affects Reverse though, if it's the EPB.

You could have a damaged parking brake shoe or one that came off. I had this happen before on a Lincoln, same issue. Before you assume anything or any particular part is at fault, I would put the parking brakes into service mode and take a look at them. If you find a fault, fix it. If nothing stand out, adjust them. This PDF helps a lot.

It may be a cable seized or like has been said, a shoe has come loose or incorrectly adjusted. I would remove wheels and hubs and have a look at the brake shoes prior to thinking about the actuator.

just and FYI to anyone that may have a similar issue while backing up, it was the parking brake shoe being rusted and the actuator cable rusted. To repair the entire parking brake system was going to be $2,200 so I passed for the time being as its always flat there the vehicle lives........thanks for the responses

I seem to think that somewhere I saw that you could just get replacement cables, but not sure were I read it so someone on here may know where to get them.

The cable might actually be fine, its stainless. It could be rust that transferred to the other bits. You can replace the shoes on your own. you can even activate the parking brake and manually release it to exercise the cable manually.

Default Have a question about parking break actuator

I have a Land Rover LR3, the parking break actuator has been ruined, can I replace it with a second-hand one in good condition or should I necessarily buy a new one? This question is because I have been told that it must be coded for the specific vehicle.

Thanks for your help.

How has it been ruined? They are, for the most part, rebuildable with new gears. You can get a used one, but odds are it will need a rebuild. I am not aware of any encoding for them, never heard of that. But they do have to be calibrated after install or service, etc.
