Default Oil Change

Thinking about doing my own oil changes. Will this save me money, or is it better to take to dealer to have done? 2008 lr3.
Thanks

It will probably save you a ton of money. The dealer is going to use a factory filter, which is just fine, but they cost about $25 if I recall correctly.

You can buy a nice wix filter for $10. Two jugs of whatever flavor of oil you want at Walmart and Robert's your mother's brother.

Haha. Sounds good. Thanks. Just didn't know if they did anything special that I would miss if I did my self.

I'm not sure they'll do anything you cannot do during an oil change, but they probably do know LR3's better than you so they'd know of common things to look for while thy have it up on the lift.

Understandable. The last two times I took it in I ended up having to take the skid plates off a thousand miles or so into oil change after seeing oil drops on garage floor. Culprit was loose oil filter both times. I'm thinking I can do just as good a job, I'm getting greasy anyway getting n there to tighten filter.

First and the last time I have used a local dealer for an oil change was while I was still under warranty. They where charging a 140 bucks for an oil , filter and service interval reset back then.
Good thing, that I always look under the car after any work has been done,as I did this time. By the time I got home from a 30 mile drive , I have already lost more than a quart of oil.
Back on the driveway , plates down , I discovered, that a mechanic or technician , as they call them, forgot to tighten an oil filter. A longer drive would have turn disastrous .
I never went to that dealer again and after 40 oil changes, that I have performed myself, I figured I saved more than 4500 dollars.I also have learned bunch of other stuff and work on my car myself after having a few additional very bad experiences with other auto shops.
Do it yourself and then you will know , it was done properly with no further surprises .
Good luck

Wow, Lucky that you inspected afterwards. That could have been costly. I've had a few bad experiences with auto shops as well. Now I question and inspect after everything. Thanks for your replies.

Get a set of Rhino ramps (or comparable), a socket set, a filter socket that fits on the end of the oil filter, (any parts store item) and 8 qts of oil and a filter. It's really pretty easy on the LR3. I do replace the drain plug once a year though. I'm sure they want you to replace it every time. It has an O ring on the flange that does get a little flat after a while.
Also the front brakes are just as easy.

Be careful when you remove the oil plug, it goes in from the side rather than the bottom. The oil will shoot out about 8 to 12 inches and make a mess of things if you don't position the collection pan correctly. Some have used cardboard or foil to direct the oil down. It only takes one time to learn the lesson. Depending on where you live, you might shoot some liquid wrench on the skid plate bolts before you try to loosen them up. We are in So Cal, no rust, and the bolts were still a bit tight. Good luck. Phil

Thanks for all advice. Went very smooth. Think I would like to get the ramps though.
