Default Oil Pressure Light On

08 LR3 SE 4.4L 195k miles. At a red light the other day sitting idle and I saw the oil pressure light come on the dash. It was on for maybe a second then went off again, blinked one more time then turned off. I pulled over, shut down, checked oil and oil level was fine. Drove home no issues. Couple days later I'm driving home at 60mph and the oil pressure light comes on and stays on for a few seconds. I pull over and haven't driven it since. In the driveway it will idle and no oil pressure light comes on.

Going to pull the actual oil pressure once I get to harbor freight, but in the mean time I can't find many threads related to oil pressure issues on the LR3. Anyone have any experience or insight with this problem? Thanks!

Also is all the oil going to come pouring out when I remove the oil pressure sensor? Thanks.

I haven’t heard of oil pressure issues on the V8. Certainly anything is possible since all it takes is some worn out bearings for oil pressure to go to heck.

Most likely situation you have is an issue with the sensor or wiring. This would make the most sense since you are getting low oil pressure readings at various rpm’s —sometimes at idle, sometimes at higher rpm — and intermittently.

You are going to lose oil when you pull the sensor, it’s next to the oil filter. Personally, I would drain the oil first to inspect it, swap the filter and inspect that, and then install a new sensor.

Sensor is easy to replace. It is right next to the oil filter adapter. There are two sensors on the adapter plate, reward one should be pressure forward is oil temperature. You will probably get some oil to escape but I would not think more than a quart since you are above the sump height. There will just be residual that may drain back a little. So just be prepared for the oil but it is not like all 8.5 quarts will come out.

Welll...I changed the oil, filter and swapped out the oil pressure sensor. It was fine for a day and then the oil pressure light came back on. It stays on for 60-90 seconds then goes out. I noticed the "Low Washer Fluid" error also started popping up so I topped that off to get rid of at least one issue, and to my surprise the "Low Washer Fluid" error message came back on a few hours later with the washer fluid full to the brim. So I checked the battery voltage a few times and got anywhere between 12.4-12.6V at the battery (with car off), but GAP says it's 12.1V if I look at the live value on my phone. The battery is two years old, doesn't seem like 12.4v would cause these issues?

I don't think it has low oil pressure, but I'll get that checked this week i guess. I'm going to start looking for water somewhere even though it hasn't rained in a little bit, maybe there's a leak. The search continues!

Low washer fluid is often a bad sensor, just like low coolant. There is voltage loss at the port, so GAP is not super accurate for standby. Best reading is indeed with meter at battery. How is the exhaust, smell like burnt oil? Any loss in oil over time? You may also want to very carefully inspect the harness and the oil pressure sensor plug.

Exhaust smells normal. I got about 8qts of oil out of it at the oil change, though I didn't check the level before I drained it but I don't think I'd be using much oil over time. I just pulled the skid plate and the sensor wiring/harness look fine, nothing seems to be out of place or worn. I saw the washer fluid sensor location in another thread, doesn't seem too bad. Just feels suspect that they're both going in the same week. I replaced my instrument cluster a few weeks ago, I might pull that and see if I pinched a wire or something when I installed it.

Thanks!

Yeah, check the cluster indeed. The sensor is direct to cluster, not computer in-between.

6. Low Oil Pressure Indicator
The low oil pressure indicator is hardwired directly to the instrument cluster. The indicator is illuminated in a red color when the ignition is moved to position II. When the engine is started and the oil pressure increases the low oil pressure indicator should extinguish. If the indicator remains illuminated or illuminates when driving the vehicle should be stopped at the earliest opportunity and the engine switched off until the fault is rectified.

Classic symptom of water in passenger footwell / corroding a splice in the wiring harness. Please check under your pass sill (remove it, the plastic thing) and see if wet down on the floor... ?

It's good that you're planning to check the actual oil pressure with a gauge, as that will help identify the issue more accurately. The oil pressure light coming on intermittently could be caused by a few things. One possibility is a faulty oil pressure sensor, which might be giving false readings. Another potential cause could be the oil pump starting to fail, which would lead to drops in oil pressure, especially at higher speeds like the 60mph instance you mentioned. There’s also a chance that the oil pickup tube could be partially blocked by sludge or debris, temporarily restricting oil flow. Lastly, with 195k miles on the engine, internal wear like worn bearings could be contributing to a drop in oil pressure. It's a good idea to avoid driving it until you've confirmed the issue to prevent further damage to the engine.
