P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1) (intermittent)
I'll stick to the facts and try to put as much info in as possible.
2007 Land Rover LR3, V8 4.4L, 206,000 miles
-Went to Land Rover Scarborough in Maine to have a shifting linkage replaced. They replaced it and said the transmission pan was heavily leaking so they took that off, replaced fluid and gasket and fixed that issue.
-When I picked up the car, shifter moves beautifully again and there's a noticeable difference in shifting between gears now that the fluid is replaced.
-After driving about a mile down the road, I stop at a stop light and notice the engine has a very heavy idle. It's bouncing the car slightly and when I came to a stop it seemed as though it might shut off.
-I turned around to take it back to the dealer and the amber check engine light comes on. I figure LR must have screwed something up.
-I get back to LR, they run the codes and say it has a couple random misfire codes, but nothing to worry about.
-I "believe" them and leave.
-Car runs fine for about an hour and a half and right before I get back home, the engine is running heavy again and the check engine light comes back on.
-I plugged my iLand Diagnostic Tool into the car and the P0171 code comes up under Engine Control Module.
-Seeing the system is reading too lean, I take apart the throttle body and clean it, clean the MAF and notice there is some oil around the PCV valve, but I didn't replace it.
- After cleaning the throttle body and MAF I go for about a 20 minute drive and the check engine light doesn't come on, but I plug it back into the diagnostic tool and the same code pops up even though I had cleared it before the test drive.
I don't know if this is something LR could've screwed up while they replaced my transmission fluid and shifting linkage, but I know I didn't have this issue before I took it into their shop.
HELLLLLLLLLLP! (Could it be the EGR Valve?...)
(LR "advisor" also tries to blame every complaint I have on "it's an older car so...") Also, if anyone knows of any LR mechanics in Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont, I'm all ears! Every time I go to an LR dealership, it seems that they get dumber and dumber.

As they have had the gearbox pan off, they would have loosened or moved the exhaust so it is possible that the O2 sensors may not be fully connected (plug/socket) which will cause engine light and lean message.
Also these engines HATE vacuum leaks. Two sources come up, oil dip tube and oil fill cap. Either is leaking/not all the way on and there will be an issue. Of course the EGR valve itself can fail and cause this too.
