Default Passenger floor board black grease?

Hello all, I have been trying to figure this out, I pulled up the passenger floor board board checking the wires that run along the floorboard due to an abs fault. I think I found the answer to that but what I also found disturbed me. I found a thick greasy black sludge all through out the floorboard where the wires are. For a moment I thought I was leaking oil but could not find a source.

How does that get below the carpet on the right (passenger) side of the vehicle? It is only in the gap were the wires are below the plastic trim that runs along the doors. When I cleaned it up i didn't really smell it. But it was black and sticky, first thing that came to mind was oil. Though I do not know how oil would have gotten in there?
