Default portable high power winch mount.

Looking for winch options on my 08 LR3. I am not intending to modify the car and I do not want to put all the money into the hidden winch mount at $500.

So, I am at a point:

Quality Comealong, Wyeth-Scott. just hookup to front or rear recover point.

then i was trying to think of a way to make a more powerful portable winch that would run off 12 volts, similar to the plug in WARN 885000 Corded PullzAll

Couldn't I buy myself the winch i want, put it on a portable tray with the receiver block, so I can put it in the rear receiver if i want, but more importantly I would put a 2" receiver sleeve with a recover point on one side and the winch tube in the other and then I would be able to put a short strap from the front or rear recovery point, to the clevis on the receiver side of the winch tray, then run the winch line out as normal. I would run a heavy gauge wire and plug to the grill and match it to the input on the winch, and have an extension available to run to the back of the truck for when i would use it there.

is this possible, I can't find anyone that has done that anywhere. I found a picture of a plain tray with some chain and hooks on it, but just after a long search of alternatives for what i want.

thanks

Brian

If you install a front receiver point, add an Anderson power connection on the front and rear, there is no reason you can't add a XD8000 or the like on a tray as you describe.

You may want to keep in mind that a good size winch, with steel wire rope, and a tray to mount it to will not be the easiest thing to pack around by hand and set up when you need it in the middle of a swampy mud hole or steep grade.

A good rule of thumb is to never go out alone, and most people that off road on a regular basis will have a winch and will usually be glad to help out.

A better idea for someone who wants the security and peace of mind without mounting a permanent solution is to carry a manual recovery kit including:

1) a come-along, Hi-Lift, PullzAll, or any hand powered or 12V powered lightweight winch
2) chain and/or wire rope
3) shackles
4) nylon slings

and most importantly
5) ****** BLOCKS (carry at least three)

****** blocks double your pulling power every time you add one. The benefit is less effort for increased pulling power. The drawback is that the amount of movement per stroke (manual jack/winch) is reduced, but the ability to pull more weight with lighter rigging is more important for temporary portable solutions. Often you only need to move a vehicle a few inches and "reduce" the stuck weight in order to free the vehicle under its own power (by adding tension the vehicle has less "weight" to try to move from a dead stop).

Helping the vehicle by increasing traction and removing obstacles will also aid in short recovery time. Traction can be increased by deflating tires, or adding sticks or rocks to help spread the weight over a larger area or give the tires something solid to sit on and raise the vehicle when high centered.

Carrying tools such as shovels, saws, axes, traction mats/sand ladders, air compressors (with tire inflation tools), a tire repair kit, and so on may help in recovery as well.

Also,

The PullzAll mentioned in your post is powered by AC household current and would require a generator. It is also only rated for 1,000 lbs.

Warn Industries - WARN Corded PullzAll

Perhaps this is more suitable:

Warn Industries - Utility Winches: 4700 DC

It is rated at 4,700 lbs and is powered by 12V DC. Keep in mind, by adding ****** blocks you can increase this rating (while slowing down the rate of movement). It weighs only 47 lbs which is much easier to handle when compared to its big brother weighing in at over 100lbs:

Warn Industries - Jeep, Truck & SUV Winches: ZEON 10 Multi-Mount
