Default Rear Differential R&R and Rebuild Questions

Hey Gang -

Few questions. I'm starting down the rabbit hole of piecing together the parts for installing an ARB rear locker into the truck. Looking for guidance and info that you others may have on doing this work. I feel like I can tackle it myself and am looking to get a used differential on eBay so that I can rebuild that one then install it.

1.) Is there an LR section in the FSM that details dropping the diff? I don't see a R&R in 205-02.
2.) Are there any other parts besides this kit that I should look at getting for the rebuild? LINK
3.) Do you know where I can get the bearing press sleeve (any of them) that is used to press the bearing onto the pinion shaft? I've looked online to no avail, and it seems to be one of the pieces of equipment I'd be missing to do this.

There is a section of the workshop manual on differential removal and installation, I just replaced my differential a few weeks back with an OEM locker. I'll see if I can locate the pages.

Some removal tricks from having done this:
  • LR3 diffs are quite heavy, I built a fiberglass cradle (overkill I realize) for my transmission jack to hold it steady on removal and to position the reinstall precisely
  • there's a youtube vide on doing a rear differential replacement on a Range Rover Sport. It's a bit of a strange video, it's like 90 minutes long and if memory serves includes ~ 15 minutes of the mechanic eating lunch, but it demonstrates very nicely how the rear hubs just "fold up" once you have the axles out of the hubs
  • see my thread on my e-diff install from a few weeks back on how I used ratchet straps to get the hubs out of the way
  • this is a good time to redo your rear brake lines and driveshaft if those need attention
  • a trick I used to get the exhaust off: I had to cut the bolts off and then to get the exhaust off the slip joint, I placed a scissor jack horizontally and let the jack pop off the exhaust from the sleeve joint.

Thanks scooter. I found only videos of an LR2 differential rebuild.

Did you rebuild your diff? Do you know if your builder replaced more components than the needle bearings, diff and pinion bearings and their related seals?

I had Roverland in Florida rebuild the differential (there were the only shop I could find that would rebuild an OEM locking differential).

I found the Youtube video I was thinking of:
.

Oh, another trick. I hammered on my rear half shafts with a 1 lb hammer for ages with no movement. A 4 lb hammer had each free in like 5 strikes.

You're awesome, always love to watch the work done before I get started on it if I can. And great tips. Much appreciated.

The piece circled in red is an inner race from an old bearing, not any kind of special tool or sleeve. These old parts are often the best because they're perfectly sized and of adequate strength. I use sockets, sleeves from a ball joint press kit, sometimes special tools, but I often end up with creative combinations of parts and pieces from my arsenal of tools and old parts. This is great that you're doing this!
