Default Replace transmission pan/filter or just fluid ?

2006 LR3 117k

I know this is hotly debated but I cant seem to find a definitive answer.

Is changing just the fluid (for $150.00) effective or should i drop the $800 my local LR shop quoted to do the more extensive pan/filter change also.

The metal pan sounds like a great solution to forgo all the work to install a new plastic pan/filter but they recommended against it as it would increase the temp of the fluid.

THX!

I'm curious about this as well. My indie shop just did the fluid for $105 plus labor but I had thought they would do the filter too.
I'm at 86K. Truck runs much smoother after the fluid but I'm left wondering why they didn't see the need to do the filter with me ready to pay.

How much did you pay for just the drain and fill including labor?

Redline D4 ATF was $105 but the labor wasn't broken out and I had other work done. I would estimate no more than $140 (my shop rocks though - they only charged me 1 hour to do transmission, engine oil and filter, transfer case, and both diffs)

Wow by the time you set up the lift, drag out tools and start draining that's probly an hour plus taking off the skid plates for oil and filter

Now doing the trans filter is supposed to be involved very involved but iirc I read that you can drain, unbolt the pan , rotate the pan 90* and pull it off without removing anything, it is just hard to get to a few bolts

I have yet to do ours so I cannot verify this

Tom R - I don't think it's possible to remove the pan by rotating 90 degrees and pulling it down. I think you have to go through all of the steps of removing the exhaust system in that area, removing the frame cross member and removing the engine mount and jacking the corner of the engine up a few inches.

You might have been looking at this thread which talks about rotating the pan 90 degrees, but notice that he just rotates it so that he can break the pan into pieces on the cross member and then pull it out since he's replacing it with a metal pan. The easier way would probably be to just saw through the vertical plastic pipe, but the end result is the same... if you want to destroy the plastic pan, it's much easier, but then you have to replace with the metal pan.
