That sucks! Trying to do some preventive maintenance and that happens!
Here's the breakdown. It looks to me like the transmission would need come out as that selector shaft won't clear the frame. Maybe a good welder? Anybody else have actual experience with this?
I received the parts a few days ago to do mine. I'm going to learn from your experience here and spend a few days with some PB Blaster before trying to remove the nut.
I’m under my LR3 this morning replacing the alternator and soaking the transmission linkage with PB Blaster.
The shaft appears to be about 13 inches long and passes all the way through the transmission housing. There’s about 10 inches clearance to the frame. However, it looks like it can slide out right over the cat and next to the O2 sensor. Then, there’s a space between the frame and body that just might be the perfect spot to slide it all the way out.
I pieced together 3/8” drive extensions to 14 inches long. Then I placed it at the shaft end and through the frame… I think it might actually work!
I am confused... first that is the shift selector shaft so it will not come out. Second, what you do you mean it snapped? In the pics it looks okay, externally? Or did it break internally?
OwlRover’s snapped, not mine. The pan and valve body would need to be removed as well. Point being it might be able to come out without removing transmission.
Happened to mine as well a month ago. I used jb weld and it held for a month. I wonder if I could tack weld it on, also p-bod where do I purchase a new selector rod? Been looking all over the web and no luck. Also I found this link to help with inserting the new rod. Good for reference. https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...-teardown.html
That is an excellent thread on xoutpost.com! I did a quick web search for the rod the other day and got the same result as you. It might take some phone calls to some of the ZF parts distributors to find the actual part number—the ZF book just gives you a location code. Maybe a junkyard...there's got to be some of these shafts laying around somewhere. I have no clue if you can weld to this metal or not. It would be worth a shot. I have pretty much zero welding skills.
