Question Some questions about front timing cover gasket replacement

Hi there. Have a small oil leak that was diagnosed by a local LR mechanic as the front timing cover on my LR3 4.4

In reviewing the RAVE manual it makes it look like I need to pull the valve covers to get the front cover off...do I?

And if so I'm assuming I should line up fresh valve cover gaskets as well? Already planning to do a heap of work as my radiator also has a pinhole leak, so I figure by pulling it I should have decent access to the engine for getting at the front gasket/seal.

Apart from the harmonic balancer remover, are there other pain points I should be on the look out for here? I've done similar work on my Land Cruiser but this is definitely the biggest job I'm trying to do on my LR. I'm a bit confused by the combination of gasket and sealer for the cover but I'm assuming it will make sense when it's in front of me...I hope...

Thanks in advance!

Pics of the leak? While the timing cover can certainly leak, there is also the more likely chance it is the oil adapter that is leaking at the block. A $10 part. This double-o-ring seal is located below the cover so it could be mistaken for a timing cover leak.

This is all I have--ignore the red, I've pulled the lower radiator hose so there's still some coolant around (prepping for radiator swap.)
Is there an obvious spot I should look at for the adapter? I certainly like the sound of checking that before embarking on major surgery.

Thanks!

I’m with Dakota on the oil filter housing gasket. It’s an easy, cheap fix.

Look here on this recent post:

I would do the cheap fix first.

Thanks to you both for your advice! I am picking up that part from the Santa Monica LR dealer tomorrow as they have one in stock, so I'll give it a go. Really appreciate the help.

Is there a link or a RAVE page you can share that details doing the fix? The thread linked shows someone with a very similar leak so I'm hoping that's my problem, just not sure where this O-ring goes yet.

It's pretty straight forward. Now that I am home looking at pics, I do see you have oil to the far right also. Thats why a proper diagnosis should involve a good cleaning so one can be certain where a fluid is coming from. I am also seeing what looks like coolant drops?

3 bolts. Two above the electrical connector and 1 below. That’s it. One of the easiest jobs to do on this rig.

Default Thanks!

Put the seal in today. Will see how my leak progresses, fingers crossed it was just this!
