Default Trailer Wiring

Hi - Has anyone wired for trailer lights, but not used the trailer loom/kit? Just wondering if it can be done/or is advisable?
Thanks!

It can be done using a cheap harness that draws (fused) power from the battery and wires in through the rear light loom (ie links to brake lights and indicators, etc). This fine for some applications but if towing a trailer doing it the proper way brings some benefits eg influences vehicle behaviour in low range (prevents the vehicle raising) and links to the tow indicator on the dash. Fitting rear tow electrics is arguably less work than doing the U-Haul bodge (taking the wire from the battery and splicing into the loom).

Thanks. I guess for my application - a small utility trailer hauling no more than a cubic yard of dirt this may be ok. However, not sure about the fused powered part. Is this needed (excuse my lack of knowledge on this part. Am new to this wiring )

Something like this would work (I'm not saying THIS would work, but it's what I'm talking about). It is fused. Don't connect anything that doesn't have a fuse in line. Google and YouTube will be your friends. I'm sure there will be plenty of 'how to's'.

Oceanguy33: Did you try the U-Haul alternative harness Pagoda suggested? I am absolutely convinced that if I ever buy a camping trailer I'd spring for the Atlantic British set-up, but given that all I want to do at the moment is rent a small U-Haul trailer one time to move some furniture, something far cheaper now would be enough. Can you report on how much of a hassle it was to hook up and how well (or not) it worked for your needs?

Thanks,

Nick in Palm Springs
