I think I'm tired and I am missing the obvious. feel free to add any info.
The fan is reverse thread. There is a very good write up on replacing the belts on Land Rover Repair Forums. I don't have a link right now. Search "Land Rover LR3 belt replacement Land Rover Repair Forums" and you should find it.

I never replaced my belt. I sold the 3 and bought a 4 instead.

Default kind of like a Ford but...

The big nut on the fan is nominal 36mm and as such, requires a 36mm fan wrench such as the Assenmacher model 8030 Fan Clutch Shaft Wrench per below. The good news is that this is almost standard Ford.

What is not standard is the 3 bolt pulley that has to be held to reverse un thread the fan. For that Assenmacher makes a 8007 fan clutch pulley holder as below.

Well alright then, so just hold the pulley and unthread (CCW) the large nut and the fan comes with it.. Right? The new pulley for the large belt will be here on Tuesday and will start the dis/assembly right away!

Kindest Regards,

Me!

Default 10mm spanner

The link below and the paragraph is how one owner describes removing the fan from his D3.

This is how I removed the fan, using standard tools. Large adjustable wrench on the 36mm hex fan spindle. 10mm spanner on a retaining nut on the pulley braced against the fan spindle. Remember left hand thread, so unscrews clockwise looking from the front of the vehicle.

OK! In and out in 45mins. Universal Clutch fan wrenches were purchased from Greggs Distributors here in Alberta. $65.00. Using a breaker bar to help with the tensioner instead of a ratchet wrench was something different. As for the steps... You guys cross-haired that perfectly.
All of the fan guards can be removed really easy just don't forget to detach the electrical connection for the clutch fan.
The small belt/fan tensioner will have to be removed to make things easier.
Wrench sizes are:
8mm
10mm
13mm
and 15mm.
breaker bar 1/2 and 3/8" work well.

running great and back on the road!

Thank you again guys!
