Default Voyager Roof Rack Install - LR3

Not sure if I can recommend Voyager racks... From ordering to delivery took 1.5 months, but that is not an issue or complaint. I knew it would not come fast. But I wanted some extra options that can not be added online, like a wire mesh deck and jerry can holders. But you simply can not reach these people. Only one pre-sale correspondence was returned and that was a couple month before the actual order (was waiting to order cause of Covid). So when I did order, it was web-based. I received no follow up email, call, etc. A month passed before I received notification that it shipped or was going to ship. A couple days before reaching a month I had contacted them via email, phone and Facebook. Then it shipped a couple days later. I was contacting just to see what was up, not in a huge hurry to get it really. I still have not had a return communication. Shipping takes a couple more weeks. It arrived in a pretty smashed up box but the rack was undamaged.

The rack itself seems to be coated well, but whatever jigs they use seem way off. Many of the mount tabs are at random angles. It was not even possible to center the rack on the truck. Not a huge deal, but its over to one side by about a quarter inch. So even though the mounting eyelets have a lot of play allowance, they are still off. My friend and I even noticed it before we put it up. The welding is okay, a little sloppy in places. Also the rack seems a lot taller than what I saw in pics on their site. Mine looks like a standard rack with a few things added on to make it the "off-road challenge edition". Where as in the pics I saw, the off-road edition is shorter and more like the low profile version.

The hardware provided is complete crap. It does not help there are no directions at all and of course you can not reach anyone at Voyager. After my friend and I racked our brains and watched a video we *thought* we had it. So we secure the back six mounts only to find the forward mounts are too high up from the truck, so nothing will work. Also the sunroof at full open hits the rack even with it pulled all the way back. We used these short couplers they provide for the back six mount locations. If you use the larger couplers, there is not enough thread available on the bolts to get through the rail and into the body mounts. They give you six small and short ones and eight tall, thicker ones. Figured six short o the back and use two larger at the front mounts. The couplers are coated in black, very nicely. But the rest of the hardware I painted. As far as we can tell, the rails stay in place. They even ask when ordering if there are rails installed. Another issue is the couplers have such a huge ID that they float around the bolts a lot, so much so that the couplers can get caught at odd angels in the openings of the eyelets. So when set, they can be uneven. I have to think that maybe one is to enlarge the rail's upper holes (that normally have the small plastic cap) to allow the couplers to drop down further. But without knowing, I did not want to drill my rails.

So I decided to just shop around for a better solution. I used M6x1.0 threaded rods in all locations. Small amount of lock-tite. Then I dropped a 1 inch steel sleeve into the rod. This sleeve is small enough to get past the first opening in the roof rail (plastic cap) and then rest on the lower part to secure the rail down to the roof itself. Above the sleeve I put a M6 flange nut and then a rather hard to find thick fender washer. You need to use thick fender washers. I managed to find some that were slightly smaller than the ones provided with the rack, this allows more movement to adjust the rack around. At top to secure the rack down I used another thick fender washer and a nylon nut. For the two months up front I used a threaded rod and two couplers. A small thin washer at the bottom and at top of the couplers another larger thick fender washer. (for those that dont know, fender washers are generally larger washers with a much smaller inside diameter. So they fit onto the bolt well but have a large surface area).

I still have no clue how to use the hardware provided in a way that would be safe. We even used more washers to prevent the couplers from wanting to pull up into the rack eyelets. That just reduced thread length for mounting and still resulted in the sunroof contact issue.

So here are some pics, I will have more of the whole rack on the truck later.

Yeah, after comparing pics on their own site and a pic from another forum, its clear to me that my rack is not the rack I wanted. Mine is much taller, not a low-profile like I wanted. And why I wanted Prospeed also.

Here is a pic from their site which comes up when you select the off-road-challnge design. And another pic from another forum where they got the mesh decking installed. I emailed them asking why their site shows a lower profile version and also mentioned my dislike for how their site works, lake of responding to inquires and follow-ups. I am sure I will hear nothing back.

Dropping $$$ and being disappointed sucks
Looks like you were able to "make it work", maybe in time the functionality will overshadow the imperfections

Looks a bit average for the cost, i'm going to build a rack as i don't like whats available or the cost of them. The prospeed rack looks good but not 2k good.

They are, in a passive non-direct way, trying to make good on the error I think they made. They of course have still not admitted that they sold me the wrong one because I am sure they dont feel they made a mistake. "We show multiple racks on our site as we custom build each one and also make multiple models for each truck.". Okay, fine. But then why not mention that the pics used are not representative of what is being ordered. I mean generally when a pic is used for a product, you sorta expect that to be the product you get. So far they said they will not charge the restocking fee of 25%. Shipping, they have not mentioned anything on that end yet. Maybe I am unreasonable? But I think their first response should have been an apology for the mix up and maybe asking how they can remedy it. Honestly to get the correct rack I may be willing to cover shipping back so long as they ship the correct one free of charge. But then part of me wonders why I should have to spend anything... I dunno. It just sucks because an early call back after placing the order could have probably prevented this. And it probably would have also meant some add-on sales for them. They really need a sales guy. Someone to be in contact with each customer through the process since they "custom build each one".

Yeah they stuffed up so should cover freight both ways, i think it would look better without that raised bar at the front.

I want the raised bar. So I can have lights and a wind deflector both installed. But the "low profile" version that I expected to get, well its all more compact and looks better too in my opinion. As seen in the pic above they use on their site with the white LR3.

You can tell them (even screenshot my post) that they lost a sale based on your post. I was fully ready to order the Voyager - because I liked it the best - but after reading your nightmare decided to go with the Baja Rack!! I mean like YESTERDAY. Do the right thing, people. It matters....and you can't escape it.
