Default What is this ???

Hey guys,
After I bought my new to me LR3 V6, I had the snorkel removed and its missing a part on the air cleaner assembly hose that Im not sure what it is and if I need to replace it...
car runs fine mpg decreased a little ..I just wonder if that missing piece allows more air to go in?? I even though about opening the hole and installing a small round K&N filter ....any thoughts?? Thanks for your help.

Bizarre. That's where the air resonator is for the V8. I don't know why anybody would remove it though. I assume it's the same for the V6. That's definitely not part of the air cleaner element though... it's on the tube from the filter box to the throttle body. And I wouldn't restrict the airflow any more by adding a second filter. No need.

Edit: Oh, and you would probably severely screw things up by adding a second filter there since it is beyond the MAF sensor. The car would think it's getting a certain amount of air, but then it wouldn't get that much because of the added filter.

They are air expansion chambers, when the throttle body slaps closed the moving air needs somewhere to go

Same type idea used in house plumbing to stop water hammer when you close a valve fast

Not sure why they would be removed unless they are not water tight, if that's the case you need a stock one and that part should go with the snorkel you are selling

Looks like something closer to the way the diesel air intake is setup. Perhaps they fitted the early V6 models with similar before they did up the V8 config?

Ditto on leaving it alone, either add the correct resonator or keep it closed up. Stock filter is more than fine for air flow, and it will screw with the already fickle (sometimes) MAF.

You can always get some Silicone tubing and a small piece of straight metal pipe to delete that modified baffle, or go with a used OEM baffle.

On my 97 RR my OEM baffle air tube cracked. I used a Honda rice burner tube, cut it to fit, and was done for around 20.00. Added a bit more air intake sound, but to me it sounded nice. From what I understand they installed those baffle air intakes to quiet the air going into the throttle body. If it doesn't leak you could just leave it alone.
