As of this weekend, I have noticed a few drops of thick pink oil/fluid dripping from what looks to be the top of the transmission area . I Cant find the culprit. Could it be a hose or seal causing this? Its getting slowly worse about 2-3 drips every few hours. Going to take it in to my mechanic in the next day or so.
What would be some possible causes? Cooler lines, hoses, seals?
Assuming this is a v8, trans fluid is honey color new & dark brown old.
You may have a coolant leak, on top of mission v8's only, check the bleeder port on top of throttle body, it runs on top of the intake under the valley and on top of trans if it is leaking.
The link is to a number of files related to the transmission.
Yes, it could be the cooling system: one of plastic hose bits on top of the engine. The best way to see them is to remove the decorative black plastic engine engine cover. The plastic bleeder tee is right on top and subject first to cracks and then complete breakage. You can purchase a new plastic tee from Land Rover with out having to purchase the attached hoses. Then look at the thermostat housing pieces.
The odds are that if it is transmission fluid leaking, that it is leaking from a round seal where the electric wires go thru the transmission case into the Mechatronic transmission shift valve controller.
One of the files in the main link is specific to the Mechatronic, link just below as well.
No, you do not have to pull the tranny to change the seal - yes, the pan has to be removed so you may as well plan on a new pan/filter combo and new LifeGuard6 oil along with the seal, but then all is done for a couple of years. Your 3 will shift smoother and it is something that would have to be done anyway.
About page 20 there is sort of a picture of the round seal to be changed. For a ZF shop, a new seal is routine as it is a known area of weakness. Ask your LR dealer where they take their 3's - no LR or Mercedes or Audi dealer will touch a ZF in house, they just act that way. They all sub to a local true independent, (not a chain shop), who knows German stuff and where the guys probably all speak German.
when mine was leaking it turned out to be the toque convertor seal. It Leaked when driving and they did have to remove the trany to fix it. It was about a $1500 job for a $20 seal.

I know
this is a huge resurrection and I’m praying that someone on the thread sees this and knows something. I’ve got a leak out of what appears to be a rubber plug on the front of my transmission behind where it meets with the engine. I cannot find any information anywhere on this rubber plug what part it is and how to fix it. Does anyone know anything about this?
Wow- thanks for that reply! That looks like the exact info I needed. The leak coincided with a transfer case front bearing fail after an off-road trip. I noticed the leak when I dropped the armor plate to do the transfer case swap - maybe I cracked or dislodged that vent tube while raising and lowering the tranny to get the t-case out. I’m out of town and can’t check the car until I’m back Monday, but I’m cautiously optimistic with this new info!
Maybe I am wrong, but I was pretty sure on our trucks the transmission does not self-vent as shown in the diagram. Instead with have a "breather" setup and that short tube shown does not even exist on the LR3.
When I looked at the video, the first thing that came to mind when I saw the windscreen and bonnet covered in fluid, was I hope they taped off the two nipples in the cover of the transfer case module located just behind the battery.
The third jpg is upside down but one can see how the open nipples channel fluids down onto the connectors. Yes, the fluids that do not soak into the connectors etc will exit as the cover it is just that, a cover, not any sort of fluid resistant case. Land Rover design never fails to puzzle me.
For me, the fix was just some 3M electrical tape to squeeze the two nipples closed at the top.
