That was gonna be my guess!!! Nice rig, man!

So how are you setup, Gordo? What size are your tires? Locker? How much off-road experience do you have?

Just trying to get some data points since this trail is new to me! I appreciate any info you can share.

No rear locker. 275/65/18 wheels and tires. Dialed in 40mm of extra lift with my GAP IID for the Whipsaw. Usually only have 25mm to help clear the tires (BFG KO2)

I'm 73 so I have a few years of experience driving in the back woods but really only doing more difficult stuff since I joined my club 7 years ago. Drove my 99 Range Rover P38 before buying the LR3 last May so the LR3 is pretty new to me. Have not really used Terrain Respnes that much aside from Snow in winter and Rock Crawl for really Rocky stuff.
Tires are the most important thing to add. There was a new Defender with us and he was having trouble in slippery spots with the stock AT tires. I am going to mud tires next year, maybe KM3.
I should add that offroad I use low ranges and shift manually between 1, 2 and 3. Usually turn DSC off.

That's awesome, man....get out there and do the things you love!

Those tires are the same size as mine. I run Cooper Discoverer STT Pros and I'm very happy with them. Had the Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs before and those things liked to EAT! I loved them, too. I have the GA tool with a little extra clearance as well; plenty of armor too. 90% of the time on the trail, I'm in 4-Lo, Mud 'n Ruts, with DSC off and HDC on. I'll go to Rock Crawl when I'm driving over really rocky terrain, otherwise I find that Mud 'n Ruts does a great job of managing traction control, lockers, etc...

We have been there before. In fact one of our members almost drove over the edge while driving on the trail at night due to an earlier breakdown rhat caused a delay.

Scary!

Do you know if any of the LR3s in your group had the rear locker?

How were the mosquitoes?

We drove up Mt. Thyne the first day and camped out at the snowmobile cabin. Mozzies were bad there but not at Wells Lake where we camped.
I don't think any of the LR3s have the lockers. We have a club member in Victoria that has one and he says it hardly ever locks up.
I also have a 2008 L322 superchrged which has the locker and driving it around in deep snow I hardly ever saw it lock up. Traction control is so effective in these vehicles.

Thanks for all the info! Glad the bugs were not a menace; should be even better when we are there in a few weeks.

I have one LR3 with the locker and one without. The one with the locker almost never uses traction control and the lockers are locking/unlocking almost constantly. Maybe it depends on the setup of the vehicle. What I mean is, in Snow Mode it likely doesn’t engage much while in Rock Crawl (and to a lesser extent Mud n Ruts) the lockers are very active. It’s always intriguing to me to watch the display and see which ones are locked for a given condition.

Sometimes it’s the center, or only the rear, or both…and I’ve decided the LR3 is way smarter (and faster) than me and I don’t pine for manual actuation like I used to.

Just got back from running the Whipsaw Trail. It was a FANTASTIC trip and the trail itself was fun, challenging and scenic.

Was wondering if you would report back. Glad you found it worth doing and didn't break anything. We do it mostly for the challenge. I guess if you have more time to spend at the lakes or meadows the scenery becomes more enjoyable.
What mix of vehicles did you have?
