Default 2010 Range Rover Sport HSE Audio Control Unit Issues

I have a 2010 RRS HSE. It had been stolen and some parts stripped out. The nav screen and the radio controls panel had been stolen. It had then been sprayed down with a fire extinguisher to cover the tracks and finger prints of the thieves. Some of the retardant evidently got on the top of the audio control unit and some made its way into the unit and onto the computer board. Initially the truck worked great, including radio, cell phone and nav unit. About 6 months ago the radio, nav and cell phone started acting up. The screen would come on for five seconds and then go dark for 55 seconds and then repeat. Occasionally it would fire up and everything worked great. About a month ago it went stopped coming on and would only do the 5 seconds on and 55 seconds off, no sound, no cell , no nav, no radio.

I bought a replacement unit from a parts yard. When I plugged it in, it didn't do anything at all, I now think that the replacement unit may be bad.

I read that it may need a software update.

I took it to the local dealer here in San Diego. They found that it wasn't a software update, but that the audio control unit was bad. (They said that it wasn't sending a fiber optics signal, they were wrong) They wanted a few thousand dollars to replace it.

I checked the unit, it was putting out the fiber optics signal. I pulled the unit and removed the cover. The computer board, had a coating of retardant dust over it. I cleaned it with electronic cleaner and carefully wiped it clean. When I reinstalled the unit, it fired up and everything seemed to work, except I now have no volume. No sound from the radio, the cell of the nav unit.

I checked the fiber optics connections, had a red light on the control unit, the nav screen, the amp, the unit under the drivers, seat and the modules in the cargo area on the passenger side.

I pulled the audio control unit and cleaned it again, reinstalled it, same results, Everything works except the audio, no sound at all.

Can these units be repaired? If so, who does it. If not, does anyone know if these have to be coded to the truck, can a used unit be used? Reason I ask, is the dealer told me that it was a dealer only part, like the key remote, it had to be Land Rover only for my VIN.

I see that Merriam Land Rover has the part for about $600, worst case scenario, I buy a new audio control unit from Merriam, I would rather have the computer board repaired if possible.

Thanks

Going through all of the on-screen functions this morning I discovered that none of the audio functions work, the fader, the tones etc. With the "audio" window open, when I press on the screen, nothing happens. Along with no sound from the radio, the phone or navigation. One more piece of the puzzle.

New info provided by the techs at local dealership. I had a chance to talk with a group of techs. None of them knew of any repair shops for the audio control unit. Bummer.

They did tell me that the nav screen is the main brain for the audio controls and navigation. They told me that the audio control unit is burned with your vin. Once burned in, It can’t be changed.

A used part, audio control unit, won’t work by itself. A used part will be tied to a specific nav screen. However. They said that If you replace a used nav screen and used audio control unit that came out of the same vehicle, that were synced together, they should work.

When I bought my used audio control unit, I also bought a nav screen with it. According to the inventory numbers marked on the parts, it appears the they came out of the same truck.

When end we first got the truck the nav screen and other parts had been stolen. I got a used nav screen. Installed it and it worked fine with the original audio control unit.

(I talked with several dealers around so cal yesterday. Most of them told me that a used audio control unit won’t work. One told me that an audio control unit can be rewritten but at this point I just don’t know.i don’t think these parts have high failure rates and dealers tend to just install new parts)

I will I’ll swap out the used, matched nav screen and audio control unit later today it tomorrow and see if that works. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Phil

The nav screen in the RRS now is dead. It isn't coming on at all. It isn't emitting the red light on the fiber optic plug. I pulled the original nav screen and audio control unit (cd). I installed a replacement nav screen and a replacement audio control unit (cd) both from the same truck. They did not work either. Now I am wondering if I am getting power to the nav screen. I checked the fuses in the engine compartment, all good. I checked behind the glove box, those were good too. Are there any other fuse boxes or fuses for the Nav Screen? Which plug and wire is the power wire? thanks Phil .

It's Alive! We now have a fully functioning head unit, nav unit, phone, etc. Let me clear up some false info from the dealer.

1. a used head unit can be used, it will need to be reprogrammed to work in your vehicle.
2. the nav screen and head unit do not need to be out of the same vehicle.
3. Luxe Electric is amazing, thanks Victor

Our head unit most likely died due to fire retardant being sprayed on it during a theft/strip episode. the nav screen and radio control panel were stolen and when the fire retardant was sprayed, it covered the head unit and evidently made its way onto the computer board contained inside. The unit slowly died.

I originally purchased a replacement head unit and matching screen from Tapatio Auto Wrecking. They told me that it was a fully-functioning unit. It wasn't. It was a bad unit. I thought that it didn't work due to a programming issue, in fact, it was just a dead unit. Sadly, Tapatio won't replace or refund the cost.

I took the truck to the dealer, they told me that the head unit was dead, that was correct. They said that only a brand new unit would work, for a cost of $3000. I thanked them and paid a $360 diagnosis fee.

Meanwhile we didn't have a radio, cell phone, bluetooth, cd, navigation, etc. for the last 16 months.

I took the RRS to Luxe Electric here in San Diego. They checked the truck and confirmed that the head unit was dead. They also confirmed that the replacement unit from Tapatio was dead as well. I got another replacement unit from Aatlas Auto Wrecking in San Diego, $175. Luxe reprogrammed to match my truck. They are incredible! Total charge from Luxe $360, a bargain. We finally have a fully -functioning head unit. I also have a two dead headunits and one extra screen. Hopefully I can sell the screen and make back some of the costs for the repair.
