Default 2012 LR4, electrical issue. Dash go blank while driving.

So this has happened a few times, but this morning was the worst.

This is my wife's car, 2012 LR4 5.0 we have owned it for about 3 years. It started about a year ago but has occurred now maybe four times. We installed a newer Interstate battery from LR about a year ago, I've checked the battery voltages and they are right on the money, I'll post numbers later. I've checked all the battery connections that I can think of to make sure they are tight.

It has been super dry here in Atlanta, FYI.

It usually just occurs at random; while driving, at a red light, etc. But this morning was the first time it has occurred while starting the car.

The tire pressure, temp gauge, AC are the first things to go out. Then the AC will stop flowing air, aka the blower, and then the entire dash goes out. The car still seems to drive normally, and no dimming of the headlights have been noticed. And then within 10-30 seconds, everything just restarts as normal.

This morning:

so the first video from today

the electrical issue at a red light, and AC is off

completely dark dash at night

TPMS light on, stereo and HVAC off.

I do own the Gap-II tool, but I'm very new at using it. The wife is currently at work with the car. About a month ago we took the car to the dealer, and they were unable to find any issue or replicate the issue. It will likely go back in the morning, as the wife is starting to feel uncomfortable driving it.

Any thoughts?, anything I can scan with GAP?

Thanks,
Nathan

Its really difficult to diagnose something like this over the internet. Heck, its hard to diagnose these issues when the car is in the shop. Without being able to read live data or look at the control module tree when its acting up, I can't tell if the Central Junction Box (CJB) is dropping Terminal 15 (T15) Circuits (see that a bunch on the Jaguar XF/XJ) or if you simply have a CAN Bus shutting down.
Because CJBs are common, it wouldn't surprise me if they recommend one, even if they can't confirm it.

Thank your for your reply. Yeah I would imagine this is going to be a pain to diagnose without having the symptoms occurring while all the computers are hooked up. The last time this occurred, around 4 months ago, the dealer was unable to find or replicate the symptoms after a week of testing. But thankfully my wife has learned now to record any episodes and resulting symptoms / variables.

the car is going back to the dealer next Wednesday for another round of testing. As that is when the next available loaner vehicle was available for a running issues / drivable issue.

I’ll report back the findings.

What was the result? I have the same thing on a 2015, happened a year ago, went away on the drive for repair, but back last night. I’m sure it will magically work when I drop it off.
Also the car wont restart without holding the key under the steering column.

I know you said your battery is testing fine, but have your considered switching your battery out? This happened to my 2011 LR4. I had just bought the battery 11 months earlier from Advance Auto. The battery tested fine, but Advance said every so often a battery will test fine but still be defective. They went ahead and replaced it for free and it has been 6 months and hasn't happened again. Not sure if it was happening with both your old and new battery, but might be worth it. Could have completely been a fluke with mine. Good luck!

OP didn't respond, but in our case dealer replaced the Quiescent Module. LR038721 LR056084 for anyone else has the issue.

Hi, after searching all over the global network, I have finally found a match for the faults on my Discovery 4 (I'm in the UK)

As this has so far foiled a few garages/specialists, I wonder if the OP (Nathan) would be able to confirm what was required to fix his car.

Rally1's diagnosis is helpful but did not exactly match my issues and his repairs have already been ruled out for my car

Many thanks in advance

Ade

Hi, I am so pleased that after hunting the entire global internet, I have finally found an exact match with those of the OP for the faults on my Discovery 4 (I am in the UK)

Although I note Rally1's reply, his faults are not quite the same and have already been ruled out.

Nathan, I wonder if you would please be able to confirm the final diagnosis as this has so far stumped by garage and a specialist diagnostics firm, although they do believe that it is current/voltage related.

Thanks in anticipation

Ade
