Default 2015 LR4 Purchase advice

I have an opportunity to purchase a 2015 LR4 with 155,000 miles on it for a very reasonable price. The seller purchased a new defender and didn’t want to trade this vehicle in. I looked at it two months ago and have a few concerns, but it does have a pretty considerable service history. This service history includes a $9000 timing chain job in 2023…photos of receipt are attached. When I test drove it it had a few little issues such as a light on the dash for the automatic start and stop in traffic and some nagging cosmetic things. However, the only real concerning issue was that it seemed to kind of float over Large bumps and rolls at higher speed. It didn’t drive like a typical truck. The suspension felt a little soft. Not bouncy… Just like you were driving on a cloud. I checked out the air suspension and it raises and lowers as it should. The Carfax checks out and it has been serviced regularly through its life. The seller also says that the front control arms have recently been replaced. Though the seller was initially asking over $10,000 they have come down considerably And now just want $6000 to get it off their hands. I would love any input forum members could provide. Thanks!

Absolutely an air suspension will not be as stiff or jarring as a typical, traditional truck suspension.
but it shouldn’t be “floating” either. How are all the bushings?

you state it has been well maintained and at that many miles be sure ALL fluids and filters have been changed a few times.

there’s no mention of the coolant hosing being replaced.

many don’t replace the stop-start battery. I did.

Here are some pertinent photos of thencarfax services specifically pertaining to fluid changes…

Yeah... well maintained??
Oil interval changes starting at
54146 at a wrench monkey place. When was the oil change before that? Was it ever? (thus the need for the timing chain replacement??)
55787, at the dealer, to get that other c... out of there and put in a proper filter. Glad to see the diffs were looked at.
91,252 is the next one?? 35,000 miles after the previous??
116,795??

No, You are getting what you paid for. Be prepared for some mechanical repairs. I expect the dealer wouldn't take it as a trade.

Truly, get it in to a dealer for an inspection so you know what you're getting in to.

Per the full carfax, oil changes were as follows:

16k Dealer
26k Dealer
42k Dealer
47k Dealer
54k valvoline
55k Dealer (with other repairs)
91k Dealer
116k Indy Shop

Yes, the lengthy intervals late in life are concerning but it was looked after early.

If you buy it expect it has some major issues, the guy bought a new defender the and the dealership was not willing to offer him a good trade, then he drops 4000.00. Those are huge red flags.

The oil change intervals are all over the place.
My 2015 felt "floaty to me" when the lower control arm bushings were shot to go, much firmer feel after replacement

Also just for the record a carfax is inaccurate for service records, a lot of shops don't report on there.

@AjjayS I agree. It doesn’t give the car a clean bill of health but I’m sure there are missing service records.
I’m going to arrange a PPI and if it checks out I’ll give it a go for $6k

Yes those aren't likely all of the oil change intervals. Valvoline 'reports in', but not all shops do so I suspect there are other oil changes in those gaps. If you like it and the test drive felt solid engine-wise then I would definitely buy it for 6k. Honestly 6k in 2025 is basically a throwaway car. 10k is typically the cheapest preowned car sitting on a legit new car dealerships lot. If you drive it for three years and the motor blows and you have to junk it you drove it for under $200 per month essentially. They're nice vehicles. If it blows up next month on the other hand you have a bit more of a dilemma.

If you aren't sure maybe test drive it again. I would also consider too how much driving I had to do. I bought a 2016 last year but I'm working from home so I'm not putting a ton of miles on it everyday. If I had for example a pizza delivery job and this were my only car then it would make zero sense to buy anything like this. In that case I'd probably just plonk down 3k to lease a Bronco Sport for $250 per month and call it a day.
