Carplay in 2013 LR4 HSE LUX
I'm with ya on people trashing the OEM system. I think it sounds great. One of the main reasons I don't care to replace the head unit with one with carplay built in. I'll grab that amazon unit and let y'all know what I think.
Interesting devices. I have an D4 Nav display in my D3. The D3 offerings on these are very poor, basically just phone video and audio mirroring. I wonder if a D4 version would work with my D4 nav display. I am on my second CarPlay/Android setup. The first had issues and I ended up returning it because the support was useless. But when it worked, it was pretty dang nice. The second, while looking identical in all ways, has very different software and I am having lots of issues with display brightness and small issue with audio. Also CarPlay is not working over USB - only works over WiFi. This is an issue because I have Starlink on my LR3. So I can either have CarPlay or I can use the Starlink with my phone, not both. The first unit worked fine over USB. And again the seller is not understanding the issues. As for AUX-in for sound, that is what most use or they harness itself spices into the AUX. I have no issues with AUX other than is being lower in volume for some reason. Some say to tie grounds but I think that reduces stereo sound (left/right) - though not sure. The boxes you mention here, not sure how they handle sound but unless on MOST I bet it is AUX or an aux-splice done via the harness. With these there is no screen being swapped. Resolution may be inferior, but these seem a little more integrated and I bet works better. To be specific on my CarPlay with screen brightness - the issue is that is does not read the CAN bus for brightness like the factory units do. So mine really has just two settings, day and night. And this is done by observing if the headlights are on. But I drive with mine on all the time, so my CarPlay screen is very dark during the day if I have my lights on. If I disable the "auto" function of that, then it is always bright even at night. So kinda pointless really. And really at night the screen is still too bright away on the lowest setting. So with these boxes at least you will never have the issue I do. I may return this one too and slap the D4 display back in. But it sure is nice having CarPlay! And there are some other cool features like on screen parking sensor display, etc.
Conch, I couldn't find the one you have in your photo on Amazon.
I got this one
I had to set tha audio on the LR4 audio system to AUX. Did you have to do the same?
Also, seems buggy. I attach to it via bluetooth, my phone ask me to connect via Carplay and sync contacts. But, when you look at the connected bluetooth devices, it shows not connected. I guessing it disconnect from bluetooth then everything is via WiFi.
Also, When you tap on the Land Rover app on the screen, some of the options will not let you go back to the apple carplay screen. Weird. Had to unplug the device and plug back in, Which will be a PITA if someone does that while the dash is put back together.
Have you had similar issues?

I haven't had any of the other problems you describe. If you have your phone(s) connected in the original Rover system, try deleting the phone(s) from the LR system. Reason - your phone's Bluetooth (either Android Auto or Carplay) is being confused trying to connect to two differing Bluetooth devices - the LR in-car system and the new unit from Autoabc. You cant connect to both. Delete it out of the original LR system and see if that clears your bugs.
Yep. Remove the BT Connection out of the phone as well as the LR4. I use Android and did that. No problems since.
