Considering LR4 - Reasonable Price?
Hey all - new member here. Always liked LR products but never owned one. I’m seriously considering purchasing a nice looking but high mileage (175k) 2012 LR4 which is listed locally. Based on my research I see these trucks are relatively reliable IF maintained correctly. This specific truck has had a fair amount of work, including:
Timing chains done at 120k miles, alternator at 140k. Within past 2 years:
- Water pump, electric fan, pulleys, crossover tubes and thermostat
- Vacuum pump
- EBC brakes and rotors
- New Arnott airbags on all 4 corners
- Genuine front air control valve
- Front hubs, control arms and steering links (alignment done after)
- Sunroof drain tubes and cowl cover
Rust is seemingly not an issue. Seller is asking 14k. Is this a generally fair price given the recent service, even with 175k miles? Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

I paid 15k USD a year ago for a 2016 with 116k miles on it that had about 12k worth of presales work done to it by the used car dealership, chains etc.
I would say what I paid was high by a couple of thousand to be honest as it had sat on their lot for about four or five months and dropped 1k off the selling price while it sat.
For yours at 14k sounds high also IMO. I feel like not many of these with over 100k on them are worth paying more than 10-12k for in 2026 but it's your call. I know it's tough if you drive one and it rides nice it's very tempting to jump in and overpay by a few thousand. They're such nice vehicles and look incredible imo. Your call.

Seems high for a 2012. Retail Market value (Carvana/KBB/Etc) in most areas wouldn't be much over the 6-8K range. Insurance wouldnt pay more than 5K for a total loss. I paid 12K for my 2015 HSE last year in FL with 113K miles on it. It was in pristine shape, and had great dealership records of maintenance from time of original purchase.
Since purchase, both high pressure fuel pumps went out, one CAT went bad, and more recently the water pump, some of the plastic coolant lines, then the thermostat housing and finally (last week) the radiator all had to be replaced. And if yours is a northern clime vehicle, you may be dealing with undercarriage rust issues and suspension problems. Now have more in repairs than I paid.
I would try to get the seller down to the 6-7 K range (or less) with that mileage.

Thanks for the input everyone. Will try to get the seller to come down. Hopefully I’ll be a LR4 owner soon…
New here as well. Just bought a 2016 HSE w/ 89k miles, single owner for $14,700. The dealership replaced the air compressor, PCV valve, auxiliary battery and oil change before put it on the lot. And it's mint. No HD package but my weekend camping doesn't need more than the Terrain Response. Original owner did everything else except timing chain, sun roof drains and valve cover gaskets. I was on the hunt for a few months. Keep waiting. The right one is out there.
Seems that the present market value of LR4's is getting close to the bottom, and getting close to the LR3 market. I'd call this an opportunity to pick up what may well be a future classic. Given that the internet is well savvy to the weaknesses of both and forum members will lead one to the resolutions for 99% of the issues they have, if you are willing to give them some attention they are robust enough to break that cycle of new car payments.
Interesting, that. How its become commonplace to go into debt to satisfy one's urges for new stuff, as opposed to saving and spending what you have.
I shake my head in sadness when I hear of some purchasing a vehicle on a 7 year lease. News flash, its not a purchase, its a loaner.
Of course, if you can write the payments off...

We know people who lease a new vehicle on a 3 year lease, but often they can't wait out the whole term of a 3 year lease so they go into one at 2 1/2 years and roll the negative equity into the new one. A lot of keeping up with the Jones's in this world.
Over on the Disco 3 UK forum, there are a number of members who are getting themselves the best LR4 they can find, Some have owned Defenders and Disco 5's and come back to the 4. Peak LR. Yep, I am looking for the best LR4 I can afford with the idea that I'm keeping it as long as I can.
As for the writing it off-one lady we know leases her vehicle but she won't bother writing down her mileage, gving up the .56 or .72 or whatever it is now through sheer laziness. She nevers owns the vehicles and won't take advantage of any benefit. Vain and lazy. She's not a LR owner.
