I picked up a 2012 LR 4 HSE Lux (V8) with 114k miles a few weeks ago. Noticed some spots on the driveway, which I thought was oil. Took some photos (attached), and now I'm thinking it's coolant. Oil level is fine, but coolant is a little low.
Any thoughts on where or what else to check? I don't have wheel ramps yet, fwiw.
Its probably a coolant pipe leaking. You'll want to keep it off the road because if it gets worse (and it will), the water pump will push all the coolant out the block immediately and onto the ground. Then it will overheat so fast that its over in a $23,000.00+ blink of an eye.
Yeah, most likely the crossover pipes need to be replaced. The coolant crossover pipes are one of the main problems on these 5.0 V8 and 3.0 supercharged V6 engines. They deteriorate every 4-5 years regardless of how much you drive, and on the supercharged engines they're a pain to replace, as you have to completely remove the supercharger. The NA engines are much easier. They have updated the coolant pipes to make them more robust, but they're still too new to fully know at this point. We special ordered our LR4 new and took delivery in 2010, and sold it in 2021 for my Defender. In the 10 1/2 years and 95k miles we put on it, it went through three sets of crossover pipes. My 2017 D5 went through one set at 37k miles and five years of ownership. I paid like $1200.00 for the job on the NA LR4 and $3k on the supercharged D5 at my preferred indy mechanic.
Dropped car off at LR dealership yesterday (it also has an open recall). Received an update late yesterday; tech determined that it's oil, and they're going to add dye to determine the source of the leak.
