Engine failure due to t-stat
Hi! I have a 2015 LR4, under 85k miles. The car died without any warning while I was driving, overheated and killed the engine. The dealership said its due to "failure of the thermostat housing" I replaced the thermostat one year ago bc the coolant kept leaking. I reached out to customer service, no good will. Very frustrating. They quoted $34k for new engine, not cool. Any suggestions on how to move forward???
When you replaced the thermostat, did you also replace the cooling pipes/crossover pipes where a known issue exists? I do find it poor that JLR has such a clear manufacturing issue and yet never issued a recall. They know the failure is out of warranty, but also know it is due to a design issue. It just adds to the reputation of the company.
Your bill will depend on how quickly you stopped after overheating. If they are saying it is such a big bill, it suggests the engine suffered major damage. There are specialists who can help, and others who will rebuild the engine for less than what you are quoted, but in any case, if you need a rebuild it is very hefty number. There are other threads on here on this subject. I hope you caught it early and it is just the cooling system that needs rebuilding.

Sorry, and I don't mean to sound unsympathetic.
But, I need facts;
1. "Who" replaced the thermostat housing? And with "what" product? And precisely "when"?
2. 34K for an engine sounds very high. What is included in that particular quote?
3. As the vehicle is 9 years old, why aren't you considering a used or rebuilt option?
4. Are you up on all your service and is it documented with a reputable source?
5. The vehicle is 9 years old. What manufacturer on this planet warrants a vehicle for 9 years. Therefore, did you do your part and purchase a 3rd party warranty, if you needed that.

1. Certified mechanic replaced the part, purchased from the dealership a little over a year ago (Set 2022)
2. 34k is the cost of new engine
3. I am considering a used or rebuilt one - the car is still at the dealership - they will not use a rebuilt one
4. Yes all services/maintenance was completed on time, most at dealership or one that is certified
5. I am the original owner, no 3rd party warranty. The part that caused this was new - replaced last year. Ironically enough the same part is now condemned.
I am hoping to find others with the same issue. I believe there was a class action settlement, trying to locate the law firm.
If anyone has any information I would REALLY appreciate it.

Hi @Tina M ,
1. but was it a LR certified technician at a LR shop?! This may be where you have lost. All labour and parts installed at the dealer comes with a 1 year warranty. So you may have qualified for “some” assistance. But not now.
2. Interesting. I don’t know where you are located but that sounds higher than msrp to me.
3. Correct. You would need a LR specialist shop to do the used one.
4. Good luck.
